My letter to Murtha FWIW

Dear Congressman Murtha,

While I am not a constituent of yours, we do share service with the United States Marine Corps. I was a Hospital Corpsman with HMM-165 and one of the last Americans to leave Viet Nam from the roof of our Embassy in Saigon in 1975.

I applaud your call for the withdrawal of American troops from Iraq. I have been deeply saddened by the feeling that I am seeing a great nation repeating another horrible mistake so soon, and so obvious.

If your enemies want to call it “cut and run” fine, let them. They were wrong to continue in Viet Nam, and they are just as wrong now.

When will empires realize they can not control populist movements? Not one yet has exuded the courage to admit that some people need to be left alone to do things themselves. And empires all have the same fate—100 years or 1,000 years later—they all run up the stairs of the embassy to the helicopters.

If we can get our troops home perhaps this fate will not befall the United States again.

I thank you sir for your courage, wish you a happy 230th year of the Marine Corps, welcome you home as a fellow Viet Nam veteran and offer the usual greeting,
