4. the abortion conundrum will ....
... keep the repukes in power and the democrats at their knees for at least the next 12 years........ just like the war in Iraq ....... it is time to rethink the philosophies/strategies on abortion.

7. no that is not why the repukes have won
Edited on Sun Nov-20-05 12:08 PM by still_one
poll after poll says the majority believe that abortion should be safe and legal

the reason we have lost is because we have been afraid to stand up for what made this party great. For the last five years we were NOT an opposition party, we followed the repuke agenda!!! What do you expect

If the democrats want to get rid of choice, and stem cell research, and get involved in peoples personal choices, they will lost their main base

I truly admire and respect Murtha for taking the courageous anti-war position he did, especially considering his past voting record, but keep in mind that a presidential candidate is supposed to resonate with his or her party's majority, and then look at his voting record as a whole.

Rated 0% by NARAL, indicating a pro-life voting record

Voted YES on Amendment to prohibit burning the US flag

Voted YES on making federal death penalty appeals harder

Supports a Constitutional Amendment for school prayer

Voted YES on passage of the Bush Administration national energy policy

Voted YES on speeding up approval of forest thinning projects

Voted NO on campaign finance reform banning soft-money contributions

Rated A+ by the NRA, indicating a pro-gun rights voting record

Some of the other stances are more sensible (immigration and unions, for example), but he's still just on the wrong side of way too many Democratic Party causes to be a good presidential candidate.
And by the way, shooga, if the polls are to be believed, there is nothing wrong with the Democratic Party's position on abortion.

10. uhhhhhhhhhhh ........ excuse me
did you notice you "donkey logo" is plunging downward .........

I don't live in middle - bread basket america either .... but this is why they have control of senate, house , and white house ........ AND SOON THEY WILL HAVE CONTROL OF SUPREME COURT .... SO i guess your thought patterns and logic is working .... just like the war in Iraq is working.

you'll go down swinging with Naral and school prayer.. but you will go down.... I guess I give you credit for standing "your ground" even though your "donkey" is heading down.

22. I don't want to get 'anything' done
I want to get very specific things done. Universal health care, livable wage, environmental/public health protection, Free speech protection, and yes, god forbid, freedom of choice as far as reproductive rights. The things that (I thought) Democrats are supposed to stand for.

I like what Murtha is doing, he is speaking the truth about this war and he would know better than most. But I don't think he represents most Democrats as far as his priorities.

19. I just don't think winning is good enough
if the priorities of the party have to change so much that they don't represent the Democratic constituents anymore.

IMO, if the party compromises that much then it "ceases to exist".

I am in no way disrespecting Murtha, btw - I am forever grateful for him for forcing this dialogue. I just don't think he represents the Democratic platform very well on most issues.

15. I still don't understand
why you think the Democrats will lose by supporting the majority opinion. Tell me what you think of the poll I linked to. Also, the donkey is not mine, it's an official Democratic Party logo and a default avatar for this board.

18. i think abortion is a very .....
.........very personal SITUATION and discussion ......... (personally I lean to the right on this one) .. but at MOST it should be at a state level ... not federal level .... I DO NOT THINK IT SHOULD BE POLITICIZED AT ALL.

you know as well as I that polls can be manipulated by the sample, wording of questions, order of questions, etc.

Edited on Sun Nov-20-05 12:39 PM by MH1
Those are pretty core issues with most Dems I know, who are all over the map on guns, gays, immigration, and abortion.

Murtha's fine for his district in PA (maybe). Not fine for the deep blue states though. Sorry.

And notice that the donkey is kicking ass - on its right.
