Breaking on CNN - Private Nike Jet My Have to Crash Land in Portland...
The 7 seater has landing gear problems. CNN will cover this as it happens at Portland airport.

1. Pilots usually seem to have success landing planes on just their bellies.
Hope they can make it down safely.

12. Okay, I see now, they were going to Toronto, apparently the gear
stuck as they were raising it. Same thing happened to me once a few
years ago.

13. Probably took off in Hillsboro, discovered problem, now going to land
on a bigger runway in Portland.

I doubt the trip was only planned for 12 miles, but Portland was the closest good place to attempt the emergency landing.

28. It had been going to Toronto, Canada, but they diverted to Portland...
...because of the Emergency equipment their.

They just said the Jet has 25,000 pounds of fuel to burn off, they should just fly to Toronto and land their, IMHO. This will take hours until they can land.

5. They just said it's a Gulfstream 5
Has not landed yet, it will be attempting a landing with "gear problems."

CNN has a helicopter shot. No emergency equipment yet.

10. This seems to be happening a lot lately
Or maybe the networks are just covering it more frequently....it's easy, cheap drama--set up a camera, watch the plane come in, and see if you get a simple landing with a lot of foam, or a big crash...

22. I think it's mostly the latter, after they saw the ratings they got...
...with the JetBlue landing, they probably are looking for these now.

I doubt it has anything to do with all the "Out-sourcing" of the Maintenance to Central America, or maybe it could.

7. It's a Gulfstream V
http://www.macobserver.com/news/00/january/000120/gulfstreamv.shtml

SNIP:
Curious about what a Gulfstream V is? It's a big jet. A nice jet. It's one of the more serious private jets one can buy and is often associated with high profile corporate execs and oil sheiks. According to the Gulfstream company, one can fly at Mach .885, cruise at 51,000 feet, and go for up to 6,500 miles without stopping. Steve Jobs, Apple's permanent iCEO, got one as a late Christmas present from Apple's Board as a token of their appreciation.

There are only 89 Gulfstream V, or G-V as the industry refers to it, in existent. At this time, there are 2 of them for sale in the used market. Somewhat pricier than an iMac DV, even an iMac DV Special Edition, a G-V will run you somewhere between US$43 million and US$48 million, yet there is still a two year waiting period for the planes.

Please people, indicate the state when you talk about Portland. Assuming we know which one your talking about is annoying to those of in Maine. Especially without links.

(Said with british accent) Just kidding!

A bit of Portland Trivia, "Portland Cement" refers to the Color of the cement, not the city it comes from, AND the Color comes from the Color of the limestone that was first quarried in Portland, England

A crash landing could not fuck up that airport any worse than it is...and even if there are evil Republicans on the plane, I hope they are all ok.

33. They just said that this was the FIRST flight for this jet!
First since it was delivered from the factory. Must have been finished on a Friday.

Right Rear gear is stuck at a 45 degree angle.

Wing scraper landing, I hope they had the insurance before they took it up.

37. I'm in Portland, HIO can land big jets in a pinch,
Technically its an international, PDX is vastly better prepared for such events.

PDX also has full aircraft maintenance/repair facilities.

So Phil's gulfstream gets it's belly scratched. :nopity:
