He should have stood firm, and the whole thing would have blown over in a few days once the other side realized that he would not apologize.

Durbin chose not to, however, and instead gave in to the carping critics and apologized. And, surprise, surprise, they kept beating up on him anyway!

4. The weird thing about the Durbin statement

was that what they were berating him for actually has turned out to be true. I remember thinking at the time that boy oh boy they're really jumping down this guy's throat for NOTHING. And now, the news is out that we're running secret prisons in the gulags.

Makes me think that the "outrage" was entirely scripted because they realized (the inner circle) that he had inadvertently come way too close to the truth.

7. I had the same thoughts too

When the information came out about the CIA secret prisons, the first thoughts I had was when Durbin was describing the torture going on at our prisons at Guatanamo and Abu Garaib comparing them to the gulags of old. Yet everything he said turns out to be the truth.
