STATEMENT FROM CONGRESSWOMAN JEAN SCHMIDT Washington, DC -

Last week as I returned to the Capitol Building after attending a funeral at Arlington National Cemetery for a local fallen Marine, I found out that the Democrats had just announced their policy position to immediately withdraw troops from Iraq.

I strongly opposed the plan from the moment I heard it.

My good friend Representative Bubp called me to discuss this plan during the House debate on the issue of immediately removing troops from Iraq.

I relayed our conversation with Representative Bubp on the House Floor.

Since that moment I have been attacked from across the country by the left.

I never meant to attack Congressman Murtha personally. I sent him a personal note of apology on Friday evening moments after my words. While I strongly disagree with his policy, neither Representative Bubp nor I ever wished to attack Congressman Murtha. I only take exception to his policy position.

I am amazed at what a national story this has become. It was never intended.

I am thankful for the thousands of supportive messages I have received from the people I represent and others across the nation since Friday. But this story has been way too focused on me, my conviction and word selection. Instead this story should be focused on the extremely poor policy the minority now propose. A policy, I might point out, that through this media storm has now been repudiated by dozens of leading members of the minority.

I have been attacked very personally, continuously since Friday evening. I am quite willing to suffer those attacks if in the end that policy I so strongly oppose is exposed as unsound. First and foremost I support the troops. They dodge bullets and bombs while I duck only hateful words.

While I wish this national media attention had never occurred, I do not shy from my strong opposition of the minority’s position.

I strongly oppose withdrawing our troops until we give them a chance to do what we sent them there to accomplish. They haven’t failed us. We must not fail them.

My conversation with Congresswoman Schmidt was based entirely on the resolution to immediately withdraw our troops from Iraq. I had serious concerns with the resolution and, as both a marine and as a constituent myself, I felt compelled to share with her my perspective on the issue.

if she really had problems with the details of Murtha's proposal, why didn't she comment on that? She did it for one reason and one reason only.........to get attention.

Don't believe a single word that comes out of her mouth!! First, she said she didn't know Murtha had been a marine, even though many people that day acknowledged his service to the country. Then she says she didn't intend to personally attack him. If she didn't intend to attack him why did she direct the comment to him personally with the insulting word 'coward'? And lastly, Bupb's own spokesperson has now denied that he ever said such a thing. Yes he talked to her before her performance but he didn't say what she suggested and also added that he would never such a thing to a hero like Murtha.

If you want my opinion, I think she's probably enjoying the attention. And the left is not the only ones who are attacking her, I hear there have been some on the right doing the same thing. In fact, it was DeLay who told her on Friday night that she must apologize immediately!!

I innocently repeated a consensus.
I was viciously victimized by the commie/socialist/secular America-haters.
I was made a political scapegoat over semantics.
Most mainstream Americans support me and the war, only a small fringe element support withdrawal.
The unfair, media-generated assault upon my innocent person has resulted in a backlash causing the leaders of the same fringe cut&run element to reverse their positions on withdrawal, out of embarrassment at the unjust attacks upon me and realization of my victimization.

First of all, "mean jean" is mistaken, a majority of the people are against this war, they feel that we were misled into the war, lied to and also feel, that we should get out!

Secondly, for her to claim that her word choice was mistake...bullshit!!! I ran for U.S. Congress and I can tell you that from the moment you announce your campaign, nothing is an accident. At her level she has research staff and speech writers. I know I did, so you can bet that she's got a lot of them. For her to claim an error in interpretation is just plain false.

Sounds like sour grapes to me. She got caught being mean spirited at a time when the country is sick of it. Keep up the pressure on her!!!!
