With one word, Cheney revealed himself.
From Murray Waas's article:

Those grievances were also perhaps illustrated by comments that Vice President Cheney himself wrote on one of Feith's reports detailing purported evidence of links between Al Qaeda and Saddam Hussein. In barely legible handwriting, Cheney wrote in the margin of the report:

"This is very good indeed … Encouraging … Not like the crap we are all so used to getting out of CIA."

http://nationaljournal.com/about/njweekly/stories/2005/1122nj1.htm

Cheney has just been given evidence that Al Qaeda has links to Saddam. Our worst post-9/11 nightmare might be true: Al Qaeda might be working with a state that could hand it nuclear weapons to use against us. And how does Cheney feel about this news? Concerned? Troubled? Terrified? Nope. He's encouraged. It's very good news, indeed...but only for someone who's looking for justification to invade Iraq for oil and war profiteering.

Dick Cheney is the enemy of the United States of America and its citizens. Treason might be too light of a charge.

10. Right.
Good point. Cheney was not approaching this with an open mind. He had come to a conclusion, and was looking for "evidence" that supported it. Everything that exposed the flaws in his conclusion is "crap." Thanks, Dick, for getting us stuck in an unnecessary war.

The World's Worst Terrorist (Bin Laden) is revealed to be working together with the other World's Worst Terrorist (Saddam), and Cheney said that was "ENCOURAGING"??

(Not that the info was true...) What else will it TAKE for idiot repukes to realize that Cheney does not exactly wish well for the United States???

73. Wait a minute. This sounds like it is being used to push a non-existant
obl/sh link. IIRC the article discusses how saddam HATED obl and al queda and thought they were as big a threat as any to his SECULAR government. This "link" is details of saddam trying to infiltrate al queda to find out intel about it and keep it OUT of Iraq. Don't fall for this rovian bushit*. This is NOT an obl/saddam/Iraq "tie", but they want us all to believe it is.

12. Great observation!
On the talking head shows, Dick was all business -- frowning about the evil he believed he saw in Saddam: "Unfortunately, it appears that our worst fears are founded. Buckle up, everyone, we don't want to go in, but I don't think we're going to have a choice. Dammitall!"

Apparently in private, he took the news much as an investor would take positive projections of next quarter's profits: "Good news, Witherspoon! I think we'll be getting into Iraq by spring!"

When people lie, lie, lie, and lie again, the periodic honest human reaction betrays their true feelings.

(and the quotes, obviously, are fabricated -- but closer to the truth than the lies they parody)

Edited on Wed Nov-23-05 09:37 PM by pat_k

The Senate Intelligence Committee has asked the White House for the CIA assessment, the PDB of September 21, 2001, and dozens of other PDBs as part of the committee's ongoing investigation into whether the Bush administration misrepresented intelligence information in the run-up to war with Iraq. The Bush administration has refused to turn over these documents.

This is a great example that Congress DID NOT see SAME info -- and still hasn't! I'd like to see this cited by every public proponent of truth to counter their "everyone agreed" BS -- and repeated as frequently.

Back when the Downing Street memo broke, the response from the beltway boobs to the fascist regime "fixing the intelligence to fit the policy" was "nothing new here... everybody knew... all part of the game..."

The magnitude of their crime is NOT captured by desciptions like "cherry picked", "manipulated", or "lied."

Bush's lies = terrorism = high crime

Bush and his PNACons** terrorized the nation with threats of a mushroom cloud. They are the terrorists and we need to refer to them as such.

** PNACons (pee na cons). Handy moniker for the Plame leakers and godfathers of the PNAC criminal syndicate.

American people and the world - HOW CAN THEY STILL BE IN OUR WHITE HOUSE???

I signed the Wes Clark petitions to hold the real culprits for the torture scandal accountable and to put Ed Shultz on the Armed Forces Radio - unanimous vote in Congress, "But suddenly, at 7 am on Monday the 17th, Allison Barber, the Pentagon's deputy assistant secretary for internal communications called Schultz's producer. Without any further explanation, she simply said that the deal was off.

It was just 11 years ago when 70 Republican Members of Congress, led by then Congressman Robert Dornan (R-CA), demanded that President Clinton's Secretary of Defense Les Aspin broadcast Rush Limbaugh's radio and television programs to the military.

Well if Armed Services Radio is good enough for Rush Limbaugh, it's certainly good enough for Ed Schultz.

I urge you to call on the Pentagon to honor their promise and air the Ed Schultz Show on Armed Forces Radio. It's time to restore political balance in the programming being broadcast to our men and women in uniform."

54. Halliburton threatens Army officials who point out contract abuse
WASHINGTON, Sept. 16 (HalliburtonWatch.org) -- A former contracting officer with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) told a congressional committee today that Halliburton regularly threatens government officials who complain about contracting abuse.

Christy Watts, who was Chief of Contracting at USACE in Louisville, Kentucky, said Halliburton and USACE "habitually" violate contracting regulations and demand employees conceal it from the public. She described a culture of fear and intimidation designed to protect Halliburton's bottom line.

"One point I need to make very clear: in my 18 years in contracting, I had never, with any other company except Halliburton, been treated in such a demeaning and intimidating manner," Watts told the Senate Democratic Policy Committee. "When pointing out to Halliburton personnel their contractual non-compliances, I was threatened verbally and physically intimidated for performing my job," she said.

Watts told the committee about frightening examples of Halliburton officials throwing temper tantrums or telephoning her home after midnight to scream at her for awarding contracts to competitors. In one instance, she was verbally accosted after informing the company that it violated regulations by failing to award 20 percent of subcontracts in Alaska to small businesses. But some members of Congress are demanding an oversight committee to prevent contracting abuse....

Sens. Joseph Lieberman (D-CT) and Susan Collins (R-ME), who is chairman of the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, announced a bill that would expand the role of the special inspector general for Iraq reconstruction to include oversight of contracts awarded in response to Katrina.

77. Do you mean Eric Alterman?
If so, did he really say Bush and the rest of the thugs in the administration did not lie?

If you are talking about Eric Alterman, that would be suprising because for the last 5 years he has been calling Bush and the other liars, even wrote a damn book about it.

Hula Boy not lying

it's always amazing how loath the media are to ever even intimate that any of these lying liars ever lies, unlike what they did during the Clinton Inquisition

they sure didn't have any problems then

48. Surly dont expect moral acountability now with such mechanisms
I think reflecting on the overall international policy now is quite revealing. Such as the stategy stated here in 2002;

We will always proceed deliberately, weighing
the consequences of our actions. To support
preemptive options, we will:
• build better, more integrated intelligence
capabilities to provide timely, accurate information
on threats, wherever they may emerge;
• coordinate closely with allies to form a
common assessment of the most dangerous
threats; and
• continue to transform our military forces to
ensure our ability to conduct rapid and
precise operations to achieve decisive results.
The purpose of our actions will always be to
eliminate a specific threat to the United States or
our allies and friends. The reasons for our actions
will be clear, the force measured, and the cause just.

53. Sign Veterans for Peace Impeachment Petition for BOTH Cheney and bush
New Declaration of Independence:

"A (President) whose character is thus marked by every act which may define a Tyrant, is unfit to be the ruler of a free people."

http://www.veteransforpeace.org/impeachment/violations.doc

Veterans for Peace believes the following to be a partial, but sufficient, summary of relevant laws violated by President George W. Bush and Vice-President Richard Cheney, arising from their decision to invade and occupy Iraq, followed by documentation for each violation. Veterans for Peace will add additional violations to this summary as they are made known by eyewitness military personnel and other credible sources.

We believe these violations constitute impeachable offenses under the U.S. Constitution Article II, sec. 4, and that the U.S. Congress is therefore compelled to impeach President Bush and Vice-President Cheney.

Someone has found proof positive that Cheney is not concerned with the welfare of Americans. There is no other way to read this notation.

This should sound the alarm as far as I'm concerned.

Will the name Dick Cheney some day take on the metaphorical implications of Benedict Arnold?

70. What is practiced in the US is not capitalism
Anyone who claims otherwise is fooling themselves. Our economy is driven by special government subsidies and tax breaks that favor specific companies over others. There is no such thing as "free markets".

72. Imagine Richard Clarke in the same situation as Cheney when he was given
this information. His reaction would be the polar opposite of Cheney's; he would be deeply concerned, and maybe even a little frightened that what he had been trying to prevent could come true.

I've thought about how this could be spun into an innocent comment by Cheney. It could be argued that Cheney was only happy that they have discovered evidence, much as a police investigator or prosecutor is happy to find evidence. The difference is that the investigator is finding evidence of a crime that they know has been committed (they know there has been a bank robbery, and they are happy when they find evidence of who did it).

But there was no known crime (connection between al Qaeda and Saddam), and most Americans would be happy that there is not one. Only Cheney seems to be thrilled to find evidence that there is this connection.

I focused on the word "encouraging" because "This is very good indeed" could be seen to refer to the quality of Feith's work ("this is very good work indeed"), rather than the info contained in it. That is definitely a stretch, but there is absolutely no other way to interpret "encouraging."

This is so revealing because it is a private communication between two of the PNAC/neocon cabal. It was never meant even for the CIA to see it.

That brings us to Murray Waas. How has he been able to get a look at this document? He isn't just told about it, he describes it as if he has seen it. Waas seems to have a source deep within the cabal. More than any other journalist, he has provided solid, original reporting on Treasongate.

And a happy Thanksgiving, everyone!

Edited on Thu Nov-24-05 06:45 PM by Peter Frank

This is some really scary shit ...a secret three man group given more credence than the entire CIA. Remember the name -- the "Iraqi Intelligence Cell"

From the original poster's article:

http://nationaljournal.com/about/njweekly/stories/2005/1122nj1.htm

One reason that Bush, Cheney, and Rumsfeld made statements that contradicted what they were told in CIA briefings might have been that they were receiving information from another source that purported to have evidence of Al Qaeda-Iraq ties. The information came from a covert intelligence unit set up shortly after the September 11 attacks by then-Undersecretary of Defense for Policy Douglas J. Feith

Feith
was a protégé of, and intensely loyal to, Cheney, Rumsfeld, then-Deputy Defense Secretary Paul D. Wolfowitz, and Cheney's then-chief of staff and national security adviser, I. Lewis (Scooter) Libby. The secretive unit was set up because Cheney, Rumsfeld, Wolfowitz, and Libby did not believe the CIA would be able to get to the bottom of the matter of Iraq-Al Qaeda ties. The four men shared a long-standing distrust of the CIA…<snip>

At first, the Feith-directed unit primarily consisted of two men, former journalist Michael Maloof and David Wurmser, a veteran of neoconservative think tanks. They liked to refer to themselves as the "Iraqi intelligence cell" of the Pentagon. And they took pride in the fact that their office was in an out-of-the-way cipher-locked room…<snip>.

They also had the heady experience of briefing Rumsfeld twice, and Feith more frequently, Maloof said. The vice president's office also showed great interest in their work. On at least three occasions, Maloof said, Samantha Ravich, then-national security adviser for terrorism to Cheney, visited their windowless offices for a briefing.

But neither Maloof nor Wurmser had any experience or formal training in intelligence analysis. Maloof later lost his security clearance, for allegedly failing to disclose a relationship with a woman who is a foreigner, and after allegations that he leaked classified information to the press. Maloof said in the interview that he has done nothing wrong and was simply being punished for his controversial theories. Wurmser has since been named as Cheney's Middle East adviser.

In January 2002, Maloof and Wurmser were succeeded at the intelligence unit by two Naval Reserve officers. Intelligence analysis from the covert unit later served as the basis for many of the erroneous public statements made by Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld, and others regarding the alleged ties between Iraq and Al Qaeda, according to former and current government officials. Intense debates still rage among longtime intelligence and foreign policy professionals as to whether those who cited the information believed it, or used it as propaganda. The unit has since been disbanded.
Earlier this month, on November 14, the Pentagon's inspector general announced an investigation into whether Feith and others associated with the covert intelligence unit engaged in "unauthorized, unlawful, or inappropriate intelligence activities." In a statement, Feith said he is "confident" that investigators will conclude that his "office worked properly and in fact improved the intelligence product by asking good questions."

The Senate Intelligence Committee has also been conducting its own probe of the Pentagon unit. But as was first disclosed by The American Prospect in an article by reporter Laura Rozen, that probe had been hampered by a lack of cooperation from Feith and the Pentagon.

Internal Pentagon records show not only that the small Pentagon unit had the ear of the highest officials in the government, but also that Rumsfeld and others considered the unit as a virtual alternative to intelligence analyses provided by the CIA.

It was upon a report from this three man CIA-alternative group -- the "Iraqi Intelligence Cell" that Cheney jotted down the note:

"This is very good indeed … Encouraging … Not like the crap we are all so used to getting out of CIA."

That is quite a read. I never cease to be amazed at the summ totallity of te evidence mounting for a broad conspiracy. More importantly, America is wise now. Even if Congress does not act, Bush will be reviled for his remaining years and will be the but of more jokes than Nixon. The evidence is mounting. Right now it is in bits and peices. I just hope that we can flip congress and look for some real accountability!

Great catch. Bookmarking.

96. I believe that we’re fast approaching the tipping point…

…That we’re reaching a critical mass of evidence of and witnesses to scandalous government activities; many of the witnesses being former government officials.

It will be a hard road for someone like Cheney to hoe, with eye witnesses testifying against him. Hopefully, gone will be the days when all he has to do to shirk accountability is slime the critics.

should be stripped of all fortunes, which should be returned to the treasury, and then stripped of all clothing and footware, flown to Iraq and forced to bury the victims of their faked war with SPOONS for 24 hours a day the rest of their natural lives.
