Remember the story I posted last week about the kid who brought a taser
to school? Half the teachers in his school called in sick to protest the fact that he was re-admitted to school by the superintendent. Turns out he did not get INTO the building with the gun; it was discovered when he tried to come into school. So the district is claiming that state laws don't apply since he never entered the building (even though the law prohibits weapons within 1000 feet of a school).

Yesterday, the superintendent told the school board he is planning on firing all the teachers who participated in the 'sick in'.

Central High School teachers returned to class as promised Monday after Friday’s “sick-out” day of protest contributed to 32 teacher absences. Some of the staff of the school at 3221 Indiana Ave. had objected when the Kansas City School District re-enrolled a student who had been suspended for taking a Taser stun gun to school.

The Missouri Safe Schools Act allows superintendents after a hearing to modify suspensions for weapons on a case-by-case basis.

Birch said the district was still reviewing whether teachers who participated in the “sick-out” would be penalized.

1. wonder how he'll replace them.
Yesterday, the superintendent told the school board he is planning on firing all the teachers who participated in the 'sick in'.

Missouri must be bursting at the seams with eager new teachers, yes?

One of our custodians found a .25 auto in a paper bag in the bushes outside our school's front door yesterday. We can't solve everything, and I'm damned if I'm trying to go to school to get shot at.

2. That is exactly what the teachers are saying!
They can't fill the vacancies they have now. Why create new ones?

It also costs beaucoup bucks to fire a tenured teacher - even with cause. The majority of the teachers who participated in this protest were tenured. So it is fiscally irresponsible to fire them.

Our supt was just told he would be fired at the end of this year so he does not care what he does now. It is sad. Many many teachers contacted the school board to plead with them to renew his contract. Before this incident, he was pretty popular among the teachers. Now I want to give him a piece of my mind.

I wonder if HE would want to come to work where he could get shot at?

4. where did you get that bit about the
firing?

That's not in that article, nor, indeed, in ANY article about this.

The Union isn't too happy with the "teachers" either.

The students that had to spend the day in the gym were probably thrilled, eh?

6. I have a good source in district administration
who told me the supt went to the board yesterday. Besides, that article is dated Monday and yesterday was Tuesday.

I heard the kids started their day in the gym but were eventually sent to class. I do know two administrators who called and offered to go over there to help but were told they were covered and had plenty of subs for the day.

I also heard that about the union and frankly, I don't get it. I rarely agree with the union and would never go on strike over pay but I would definitely support a district wide walkout if these teachers are indeed fired.

We absolutely HAVE TO guarantee safe schools for our kids. Tasers are not safe. They do NOT belong in schools. Period.
