NASHVILLE, Tennessee (Reuters) - A twin-engine plane carrying President George W. Bush's chief of staff, Andrew Card, made an emergency landing in Nashville on Saturday when smoke was detected in the cockpit, officials said.

No one was injured when the Gulfstream 4 heading from Texas to Washington with Card and 12 others aboard landed, Nashville Airport spokeswoman Lynne Lowrance said.

She said the plane made an emergency landing about 4 p.m., and added the cause of the smoke had not been determined. One runway was closed for the landing.

Card and his party later boarded another plane and left for Washington.

White House spokesman Ken Lisaius said Card had been at Bush's ranch in Crawford, Texas, where the president is taking a six-day Thanksgiving break.

2. Wasn't he the leader of the anti-rove faction?
At least that's what I recall from a couple weeks ago. He should have heeded the standard advice "stay off of small planes".:tinfoilhat:

8. Even If Rove Had Nothing To Do With This Could This Put Suspicions....
in the mind of Andy Card and cause even a bigger rift in the WH?

We could be in for some interesting times - good WH watching.

3. Playing his Card wisely?
Would the plan to have been to diss Card (pun intended)so that he would take the heat, somehow, for Plamegate?

6. Safe rather than sorry .. indeed. Kudos to the pilots.
The only time to trouble-shoot smoke in the cockpit or cabin is during the high-dive to get the aircraft on the ground. Time wasted in NOT proceeding immediately to the nearest suitable airport sets the aircraft up for catastrophe. I don't care who was on that Gulfstream IV, or what caused the smoke, the pilots did the right thing.

I have had smoke/fire in the cockpit/cabin several times in my 17,000+ flying hours. Nothing that I can think of strikes fear into the heart of a pilot like that first whiff of acrid smoke at FL 430. The only thing worse is smoke in the cockpit/cabin on a long oceanic crossing.
:scared:

7. I'm not sure what you're thinking. I'm thinking that...
planes have mechanical and electrical failures from time to time.
