1. What, will they go on a shooting rampage if someone tells them
"Happy Holidays" rather than "Merry Christmas"?

Probably. Dumb question.

5. Dumb
I am a lifetime Atheist, never offended by "Merry Christmas".

It's just a myth (who in their right mind believes in myth...hmmmm).

I swear, every time I even flip past that cesspool, one of the whack jobs is blathering on about this topic!!! They sensed bush was losing his base and had to go to the "poor persecuted Christians" myth to try and save him...They're just lucky no one is feeding them to the lions...not Christians in general, just this crazy mutant hybrid type that watches FOX and buys gibson's dumbass book!

22. I vote for feeding them to the lions!
I personally could give a flying fuck what you call this holiday, but, in my personal opinion, it has nothing to do with the teachings of Christ. Another, unfortunately unnamed, DUer called it right. It is Giftmas and only celebrates the god of capitalists. No one actually equates Jesus with this holiday anymore. It is a celebration of Manna.

Now, personally, I'm an atheist with strong leanings toward the Flying Spaghetti Monster (hey, it's hard to argue with stripper factories AND beer volcanoes)followed closely by the teachings of Buddha, but, inasmuch as I understand the teachings of Jesus, I respect them. After all, the guy was a socialist. What this season of rampant consumerism has to do with his teachings is beyond me.

In my opinion, the so called "war on Christmas" is another red herring, tossed out by the wack job, Xtians to stir up more shit. Hey, I don't give a fuck WHAT YOU BELIEVE, OR WHAT YOU DO IN YOUR BEDROOM! Just don't try to make me believe it. O.K.

10. done.
The fundies all have their stockings in a twist over this issue. They're calling for bans on companies that don't say "Merry Christmas", etc...

How stupid.

The Call2Action people have sent around outrageous claims saying 96% of Americans are Christians, blah blah blah..... and that this CHRISTIAN COUNTRY should stay that way and the heck with the Jews and Muslims and anyone else.

21. 96%? A "Christian country"? Only in their wildest wet dreams. The FACTS of

real American history & surveys done on the "religions" practiced in the US have disproven this repeatedly.

http://www.religioustolerance.org/chr_prac2.htm

http://www.valpo.edu/geomet/geo/courses/geo200/religion.html

The fact is that this Holiday season is celebrated by more religions/spiritual paths then just "Christians". Making someone say "Merry Christmas" when they are Jewish, Pagan, Atheist, etc is not what this season is all about and it's not what this country was truly founded to be about.

edited to comment: Sorry... I didn't mesn the pic to show up I thought I was only posting a link to the pic.

25. What an interesting map!
Thank you so much for that.

I wonder, though, how much that's changed in five years. It sure seems like I'm completely surrounded by fundamentalists here in NC and it doesn't look "that religious" on the map! In fact, the "Bible Belt" looks decidely hole-y - not HOLY!

27. I was surpised at how it looked as well. If you click the link at the
very bottom of the map it will take you to links to other maps that break it down even further by religion. I wonder what it would look like if they included some growing spiritual paths such as Wiccan and Buddist. B-)

11. This is an issue, WHY? Gads. All year long...
every day, the people in stores tell me to "Have a good one!" I never know if they mean a good bowel movement or a good sexual encounter or what.

Why can't they either just say "Thank you" or simply smile?

15. Screw it
I am tired of corporations requiring employees to instruct customers as to what type of day or holiday a customer should have.

It is altogether ridiculous.

14. I think "who cares" is a dangerous opinion to have on this issue.
I'm not accusing anyone here. But if we collectively shrug our shoulders and say "Who cares? Say Merry Christmas!" Falwell and co. will take it as a sign of encouragement, and our leaders will interpret it not as common sense, but as a sign of the right's strength and the ideological dominance of the fundies in america.

Turning "Merry Christmas" into a political battle cry IS offensive. Vote for Happy Holidays.
