Nora Ephron: Why Woodward Dogged Fitzgerald
If you don’t talk to Woodward, you’ll be sorry. I mention this not because it’s precisely true (look at me), but because it’s an operating truth in official Washington. What’s more, it’s the only explanation I can come up with for why Woodward was foolish enough to trash Fitzgerald’s investigation; I suspect that Fitzgerald is the only powerful figure in Washington who does not pour his heart out to Woodward on a weekly basis, and Woodward was telling him that he’d better get on the train.

But that’s just a theory.

Many years ago, a journalist named Theodore H. White revolutionized campaign reporting by writing a series of books called The Making of the President. He became an insider, and everyone on the campaign spilled their guts out to him. Woodward has essentially become our Theodore H. White. He’s so used to being told secrets that when he first heard Valerie Plame’s name from his still unnamed source, it probably did seem casual, informal and not particularly conspiratorial, as he said last week. But I can’t help but be reminded of what happened to Teddy White. By the time he wrote his third book, The Making of the President l972, he was so far inside that he managed to miss the major story of the campaign, which was Watergate. The reporters on it were, of course, Woodward and Bernstein. They were outsiders, and their lack of top-level access was probably their greatest asset. Huffington Post

1. Just wonderin' ...
Woodward keeps saying that Valerie Plame's name was continually dropped into conversation, that people mentioned it 'casually', without any hint that they might be discussing something confidential.

Wish some media-type (yeah, right) would ask the OBVIOUS question of Mr. Woodward: "Were these same people 'casually dropping' the names of any other covert CIA operatives? Or was it just this ONE name that seemed to be on everyone's lips, for no apparent reason?"

IMHO, his story leads me to believe that EVERYONE had been 'directed' to mention Ms. Plame's name, so that 'blame' could never be pinned down to one person.

Just a thought.

8. I know when Woodward did the Belushi book, some of his truly close friends

absolutely refused to cooperate, and Woodward twisted some of the stories about them to make them appear to be more into drugs than they were. He went with hearsay.

I know the whole thing ended up being very uncomfortable for Judy, because she had promised cooperation - but John's smarter friends saw through Woodward's phony trust me bit and wouldn't talk to him at all.

9. Does this man have the biggest ego in the universe?
At this point, I'm thinking the size of Bob Woodward's ego has to rival the square footage of the Grand Canyon.

>I suspect that Fitzgerald is the only powerful figure in Washington who does not pour his heart out to Woodward on a weekly basis, and Woodward was telling him that he’d better get on the train.<

Let's see: Duplicitous, narcissistic, self-important, washed-up Bush apologist faux journalist thinks that brilliant, successful, impartial regular guy prosecutie wants to spend any time at all trading pointless and time-wasting bon mots with him.

Yeah. That's going to happen.
