Questions from a RW fundy... and my responses |
|
Edited on Tue Nov-29-05 10:41 AM by LuckyTheDog
From another message board I visit. The questions were posed by a RW fundy. Each is followed by my response: ----------------------------------------- Hey, XXXX,
Here are some responses to the questions you posed below:
1) Why are secular moral values better than any religion's moral values?
Who has suggested that? It's just that the government is meant to be secular. The individuals in it can be as religious as they like... and that is a good thing. But they cross the line when they use their authority to impose their religious beliefs on others.
(2) Isn't it absurd to believe that morals can possibly be unbiased or neutral?
Again, is issue is not whether "morals can possibly be unbiased or neutral" (whatever that means). The issue is whether government officials should use their authority to impose their religious beliefs on others.
(3) Would there be any harm in incorporating plurality, rather than atheism, in our nation's moral code?
HUH? Now that makes no sense. I have no clue what you mean when you say that atheism has "incorporated" "in our nation's moral code." Nothing like that has happened and nobody is promoting that. That is a real head-scratcher.
(4) What the hell are secular morals?
Again, I think you have missed the point. PEOPLE have morals. Governmental institutions have RULES. Nobody is suggesting any limitations on a person's individual concept of morality.

I usually cringe when I see subject titles similar to yours. But, your post was a nice surprise. Spot-on in fact.

2. I've also noticed that they have trouble distinguishing ethics and morals. |

I think some people get confused at the idea that someone may be a good person but may or may not be a God person. My moral beliefs are in place because I do not wish to cause others or myself harm. I do not like lying and do not condone stealing, but I also recognize that in extreme situations, both can be necessary evils.
What saddens me is that many of these activist evangelicals get "all or nothing" - they see any secularism as an evil to be fought. They equate a government which does not sanction a state religion as being atheist, thus the plurality question.
I do believe that many of these people are trying to do what they see as good - they are trying to save everyone without considering that some may not want to be saved. To many monotheists, it is difficult to reconcile the ideas of One Truth with accepting others' differing beliefs.
