Damn it Europe! It's vacation, not "on holiday". SAVE vacation now. |

Edited on Thu Dec-01-05 12:02 PM by Feeney2
Vacation is slowly being changed by pin-head liberals in this country, and I'm not about to let it happen. I'm going on vacation and I say it with pride. And if have to be the one to lead us to keep vacation, I accept the challenge.:sarcasm:

1. Only Americans say "vacation" |
|
On the other side of the Atlantic, it always has been "holiday."

18. Me too. I regard "holiday" as a Britishism. The French say 'vacance..' |
|
It's my impression that 'vacation' (equivalents in other languages) is used far more widely on the continent.
"Holiday" is, in English, derived from "holy day." ('Christmas' is derived from "Christ's Mass.") Where there's a similar linguistic distinction between "holy day" and "vacate," I think national culture might drive usage. (I.e., I'm guessing Italy favors the equivalent of "holiday.")

5. I'm not sure that Europe says holiday |
|
Afterall they speak French, German, Spanish, Italian &c.&c. there.
Obviously we say holiday here in England - and just as obviously we're right.

used the term 'Vac' in one of his books, not holiday.
An interesting writer. I especially like 'Hiroshima Joe'- a sad tale.

15. 'Vac' means the non-teaching periods of universities |
|
in particular the 'long vac' in summer. Use it with a working person and they'll think you're a loony.

That explains it. Much of the story took place in high school and university. I did not much care for that book to the point that I did not finish it.
Thank you.

12. And what about hospital? |
|
You weren't "in hospital" you were "in THE hospital," you limeys!
And you didn't stop by the sweetshop for some crisps before driving your lorry back to your flat and putting the pram in the lift before going up to watch telly before your date with that totty on your floor! You stopped by the candy store to get some chips before driving your truck back to your apartment and putting your baby buggy in the elevator before you went up to watch television before going out with that hot woman on your floor!
We can't let English be replaced by... uh, English!

17. YOU'RE leading the vacation challenge??? Until you spend 40%... |
|
...of your term in office on vacation, you're just talking the talk--when it comes to "vacation," it's our "president" who's walking the walk.
