.. and the Daily Show NEVER Made Fun of Howard Dean, Either |
|
Edited on Thu Dec-01-05 12:40 PM by Crisco
All this righteousness about Jon Stewart making a wisecrack about John Kerry once every three months or so (yes folks, last night was not the first time) is a hoot and a half.
If John Kerry had won the presidency in 2004, how often do you think he'd be a butt of TDS jokes, then? More like once per night. 50/50 chance of it, at least.
Because that's what politically-oriented comedians do. They make fun of people in power. They say truths that few others dare.
I don't want to get into a retread of all the primaries fights, here, just to say that John F. Kerry was not the golden ideal candidate that some people want to think he was. If he were, Jon Stewart would be making jokes about him more often (see above).
As for how he's supposed to conduct himself during the supposedly more-serious interviews, how he conducts himself is up to Stewart, and Stewart alone. Some people might want to have him fawn over Democratic leaders the way Peggy Noonan gets out the kneepads for 'pukes, or say whatever they want to unchallenged, like Tim Russert, but I'm not in that group, nor are the majority of Stewart's fans.

2. Fair enough, but if all he could do was a riff on the Dean scream |
|
that would be pretty pathetic too.
So, I don't normally get to see, what's his usual riff on Dean, anyway, if Dean has been the subject as well?
Perhaps if Jon just got a DIFFERENT joke about Kerry, it would have seemed less unnecessary.

3. There Are Those Who Want The Anti-Faux, Anti-Rush |
|
Being fair and objective isn't enough...some want the airwaves full of liberal and progressive advocates...creating a left wing echo chamber similar to the right. Some have already set the standards as to the discourse as well...where one "crosses the line"...and that generally falls on any comment made about a popular DU political icon.
Sadly, Stewart's a victim here of what he hates the most. He went on Crossfire last year and made a point as to how such "news programs" had become farces...political free-for-alls and how corporate media uses divisiveness to feather their own nests. When he jumps into that fire...calling out some of the hacks who he's able to bring on the show, he's a genius...when he tries to be fair and bring on someone from "the dark side", he's called a "sell-out"...and when he dares to satyrize an icon (especially a DU one), that's the ultimate sell-out.
There's a lot of frustration here...years of shouting in the wilderness...so I can understand the need to get out some of that angst. That's why there's places like this...
Cheers...

He's not a journalist, he's an artist. The best way to dull such a such a person's threat to 'the powers that be' is to praise them all to hell, get them liking that praise, and make them not want the praise to go away.
I wouldn't exactly call the left side of the aisle, 'the powers that be' right now, but if we ever do get it back, I reckon there'll be some major howling going on. Because, as I said, if Kerry were president right now, he'd be subject material almost every night.
