Theory: "War on Christmas" is ALL MADE UP, NOT THERE!
All of the stories that are bitching about the “War on Christmas” are one sided. “I celebrate Christmas, why am I forced to say Happy Holiday”, yet I never see the people that are doing the forcing.

Bill “Falafel” O’Reilly is pushing it, from what I can see, he is almost the total movement. He starts and a few catch on.

I am starting to think that, like the rest of the Right Wing agenda, ALL MADE UP…

People there is no WAR ON CHRISTMAS, it is not there, this is smoke and mirrors to try to stoke evangelicals up… then one day Bush will make a speech, and say, “Merry Christmas” and all the nuts will cheer!!

IT IS ALL MADE UP!!!!!!

1. Yes--they are changing the subject and
also working up the fundies so that they can play "righteously indignant victim of religious persecution" once again.

If I had my druthers I'd rather not see many more postings on this subject here at DU, because it means that on some level we're buying into this nonsense and helping them change the subject too--even if it is just to make fun of it.

4. Finally a war Conservatives can feel good about.
The War on Terror is so passe. Iraq War? TIE-URD! The war all the cool conservatives are ranting about is so much more fun: The War Against Christmas!

This is one of the GOPs more transparent big distractions. Transparent that is if you have half a brain. So it’s scary to think about how much thier base picks this ship up and start foaming the mouth over it. The other day I heard one of these GOP morons bitching on Air America radio about how they went into WalMart (where else) and were told “Happy Holidays”. I mean, what the fuck, do I LOOK like a jew? It’s fucking CHRISTMAS you goddamn communist.

Lets ponder for a minute. If Jesus were around today do you think he’d support his followers declaring a “war” over people not mentioning the celebration of his birth BY NAME? I kinda doubt it, but then again i’m not a “Christian.”

No matter. The GOP has dispatched thier flying monkey brigade pundit corp. People like Bill O’reily are all over the the airways these days with the latest GOP talking points in hand, breathlessly warning us all about the evil liberal/secular conspiracy to off Christianity by eliminating Christmas. It’d be hillarious if it weren’t so damn effective for the GOP.

Why do Conservatives hate Liberals? Because we love to kill babys (not embryos), because we want to give child pedophiles the right to marry seven year olds, and because we are trying to kill Christmas. This is how a lot of these people think. Oh and remember if Kerry would have won he would have banned the Bible (this was actually mailed to GOP voters in the South.)

Why not invent a war that is "winnable"? Yeah, it won't be but a few more weeks that the pundits from Fox will come out and say "Well say what you want to about the war on terror, but at least we saved Christmas and really, that's what our troops are dying for."

7. Happy Holidays is inclusive, that's why it is popular.
Happy Holidays is an invitation to those with other beliefs to enjoy the Holiday Season. Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays, they mean the same to me. It is a time to celebrate friends and family.

The whole agguement is hogwash. Again, an attempt to paint liberals as being against something precious to Americans.

We are at war....with Bush. He is ruining the shining light on a hill.

"holy days"?

What a bunch of idiots.

11. I don't know if war is the proper term.....
I know people here in San Diego were livid when the big event in Balboa Park was changed from Christmas on the Prado to December Nights at the Prado.

And the "holiday tree"? C'mon its a Christmas tree for crissakes.

But other than that, I have no problem with people saying Happy Holidays for a couple of reasons.

1) The season has taken on a more secular feel that is more inclusive

2) Happy holidays can be said during the whole month and you're covered. None of this Merry Christmas BS when its the 1st of December.

17. We go through this every year.
I'm thoroughly sick of hearing about it. An elderly friend of mine recently forwarded an e-mail on the subject again this year and I sent the following response:

There are many people in this country who celebrate and shop for a different winter holiday than Christmas. It is not a persecution of Christians to tell them that they're not the only people in the world and don't get to have things exclusively their way.

This whole argument is incredibly stupid and the whining is particularly irritating. The whole business is a nitpicking nonissue perpetrated by a bunch of petulant brats.

Somehow, I don't think this is going to close discussion on the issue.

18. I Feel More Like It's a War On People Who Are Trying to Be Considerate
I'd feel pretty stupid saying, 'Merry Christmas' to my Jewish friends. As would most broadcasters and media people. Some of who are Jewish, as well.

20. I Agree
Even though people are saying "Happy Holidays" instead of "Merry Christmas", it isn't like people have stopped celebrating Christmas. Those Fundies have too much of a persecution complex. Nothing has really changed, but they just don't get it.

21. Faux depends on viewers who feel victimized
You know the right wingers who come alive under fear and rally behind their leaders who say they will save them.

This was all made up by Faux. I work with Muslims, Hindus, Jews and Christians. No one has a problem with Christmas.

But happy holidays (holy days) is far more inclusive. We all PREFER to say happy holidays.

22. Yes. They're trying to turn Christmas into another "wedge issue".
Now millions of Americans can feel like they are making a "bold" and "righteous" political statement when they celebrate Christmas this year. Other Americans can feel as if they're somehow giving in to the right wingnuts when they celebrate Christmas. Still more Americans, those who don't celebrate Christmas because they belong to a non-Christian religion, or who just don't celebrate it, can be made to feel like despised social outcasts. The predominant sentiment of the season will no longer be "Peace on Earth, good will toward men.", but "FUCK YOU ASSHOLE!". Traditional symbols of Christmas will become the functional equivilent of giant middle fingers being waved in the face of one's political enemies.

Nice work these "Christians" are doing.
