http://www.commercialalert.org/news-archive.php?article_id=844&subcategory_id=&category=&year=2005&month=12&day=01The National Park Service is asking for public comment on a proposal to solicit companies to let them use the Park Service in advertising or public relations campaigns – in exchange for big contributions. The proposal would give corporations opportunities to put their logos in the parks, on park brochures, kiosks and benches, among other places. Monday is the deadline to send comments.
At one time I would have thought it was a great way to get money for the parks, blah, blah, blah. However, the insidious result is that all sense of a 'national heritage' or 'the public good' is being replaced by a sense that the public must be grateful to corporations for whatever scraps are thrown from the table. And once corporations are paying for 'sponsorships' at National Parks, and the parks are dependent on that income to operate effectively, I doubt that the parks will say 'No' to resource exploitation or further commercialism.
