Watch this video. flame me if you must, but watch this video. |
|
I just saw it for the first time and looked over at my two sleeping cats. And people wonder why we take it personally. Be brave. I challenge you to watch it. http://www.furisdead.com/feat-dogcatfur.asp

1. I don't like seeing pigs slaughtered |
|
Where are you going to draw the line?
- Testing drugs and surgical procedures on animals before humans - Killing animals to eat them - Killing animals to wear them - Keeping animals as pets and in zoos

whatever they feel is "necessary" vs. "unnecessary"
Most people, on most issues, are not absolutist either way... there is no definite place "to draw the line" but most people draw it somewhere in the middle. the world is not black and white.
most people believe that animals can feel pain and suffer and therefore we should exercise some regard to an animal's welfare even if we are going to utilize that animal for some economic end.
Did you watch the video?
Cats are in wire crates thrown from off the top of tall trucks onto the concrete floor, smashing legs, etc. Is that "necessary" just for someone's "rabbit" or "coyote" trim coat?
Most people judge "necessity" as to whether there are adequate substitutes available.
Is there an alternative to "rabbit" fur poms-poms hanging off of a winter coat? Sure.
Most people consider such things when they formulate their responses animal welfare issues rather than a knee jerk all-or-nothing "if i let compassion affect my beliefs on this one they'll be banning meat before I know it" response.
on edit: i am going to bed now so don't expect a response tonight. i will check tomorrow morning. just, please. if you admit animals can feel pain, you needn't become an animal rights activist, don't be afraid to add a little compassion and draw the line somewhere in the gray.

3. there's an alternative to meat as well |
|
I eat meat, even though I know the conditions some livestock are horrendous by human or American cat/dog standards.
In India, our treatment of bovines is just as horrendous as many Westerners consider the treatment of cats and dogs in Eastern cultures.
I don't want my cat to be eaten. And he wont be. Still, I think I'm adventurous enough to try cat or dog meat if I'm ever offered.
I think if one is to make an outcry about subjecting animals to unnecessary pain or distress, we have lots of practices to rectify ourselves before we profess moral outrage about similar treatment of dogs and cats by Eastern cultures.

Western culture on everyone else. I do not eat any red meat period but I do eat chicken and fish so who the fugg am I to tell anyone else what to eat. If Asians eat dogs and cats and Westerners eat cows, pigs, sheep or whatever so be it. Who the fugg are Westerners to tell anyone else which animal they should or should not eat given the cruelty inflicted by their leaders (in all spheres) on every living thing for the past 500 years.

4. I am not condemning people for disagreeing with me but |
|
I have been a vegetarian for most of my life because eating meat is not necessary.
There is a real hypocrisy that Americans get so upset when puppies or kittens are treated poorly, but don't care how pigs or cows are treated.

8. OK- that was horrifying.. but some of that treatment has to be cultural |
|
...people in the West wouldn't stand for it (if it was done in our own countries). The look in those cats' and dogs' eyes was heartbreaking. Who needs fur trim, anyway?
