President excused from jury duty

AUSTIN, Texas — Unspecified commitments will keep President George W. Bush from answering a jury summons Monday before a state district judge in Waco, Texas.

The president, however, has made it clear that he intends to fulfill his civic obligation. He asked Thursday that he be rescheduled for jury duty. District Judge Ralph Strother said he offered the White House a list of potential dates from which to choose in each of the first six months of 2006.

The president's press secretary, Scott McClellan, said Thursday the president is taking his jury duty seriously, after learning from the press he had been summoned.

"We have since called the court to inform them that the president has other commitments on Monday and that he would like to reschedule his jury duty," McClellan told laughing reporters at his daily press briefing, "On a serious note, jury duty is an important civic responsibility and it's important that people do serve."

3. Rescheduling jury duty is easy.
We can do it online in Harris County, Texas. But you eventually have to show up. Unless you've got connections.
