What the world needs now - 1971
On another thread today, a poster mentioned that they were listening to Abraham, Martin, and John. It brought up a memory of a Tom Clay song from 1971 called "What the world needs now" which is a compilation of the song "What the world needs now" and "Abraham, Martin, and John" overlaid with recordings of the assassination and aftermath of the assassination of JFK, MLK, and RFK.

It is very touching, and to this day gives me chills to listen to it.

I did a bit of research trying to find a website that had the recording, and I was astounded to find web sites devoted to the song, along with testimonials about it very similar to my own thoughts.

It appears that the recording has, or will be re-released.

Any other DUers remember this song, and if so, did it shape you in your younger years?

2. Yes! I love that song!
It came out the year I was born. What a different time, but amazing how things haven't changed all that much. I've heard the song used on commercials, which always rubs me wrong.

I am looking forward to hearing it again, thanks for the reminder!

Notable movies from that year:

Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory
A Clockwork Orange
The French Connection
Dirty Harry
Harold and Maude
Diamonds are Forever
The Last Picture Show
Straw Dogs
Fiddler on the Roof
Summer of '42
Sometimes a Great Notion

Other songs from that year:

My Sweet Lord by George Harrison
What's Goin On by Marvin Gaye
You've Got A Friend by James Taylor
The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down by Joan Baez
Riders on The Storm by The Doors
Won't Get Fooled Again by The Who
Imagine by John Lennon
Me and Bobby McGee by Janis Joplin (posthumously released)
It's Too Late by Carole King
Proud Mary by Ike and Tina Turner
Peace Train by Cat Stevens
Joy to the World by Three Dog Night
Stairway to Heaven by Led Zeppelin
I Am Woman by Helen Reddy
and how could a list be complete without...
She's a Lady by Tom Jones :)

Yeah it was a fine year. Not just cuz I was born that year either. Some other cool folks were born that year too: Ewan McGregor, Mary J. Blige, Alison Krause. We lost some greats as well: Jim Morrison, Louis Armstrong, Duane Allman.

Thanks for the reminiscing.

4. I was becoming a junior in high school.
I am pretty sure they haven't used Tom Clay's version in any commercials, but I could be wrong. I think Burt Bacharach did the original song, and you are right-- applies today very well, as in all times.

I wish some of the liberal radio stations would play this song (Tom Clay's version, or even BBs) occasionally to break up their segments.

5. Another good one from that era by Bacharach : The Windows of the World
The windows of the world are covered with rain,

Where is the sunshine we once knew?

Ev'rybody knows when little children play

They need a sunny day to grow straight and tall.

Let the sun shine through.

The windows of the world are covered with rain,

When will those black skies turn to blue?

Ev'rybody knows when boys grow into men

They start to wonder when their country will call.

Let the sun shine through.

The windows of the world are covered with rain,

What is the whole world coming to?

Ev'rybody knows when men can not be friends

Their quarrel often ends where some have to die.

Let the sun shine through.

The windows of the world are covered with rain,

There must be something we can do.

Ev'rybody knows whenever rain appears

It's really angel tears.

How long must they cry?

Let the sun shine through.
