DU OATH: Looking Toward Change in 2006 |
|
We have roughly one year until elections in 2006.
I know I don't post that much, and when I have it hasn't always been in the general interest of backing Democratic candidates (though I would say it has always been in the interest of backing progressive causes).
I want to say right now that I will work for the next year to change our government in 2006. I will not give in to the easy, oppositional desire to tear down Democrats and take contrary viewpoints. I will not waste time with divisive words or pedantic debates.
In short, I will discuss, debate, and argue in moderation with a view toward compromise and inclusion.
I will remain stoic in the face of flame-bait. I will shrug off insults.
I will shun inflammatory websites.
I will put hardened ideology aside for ONE YEAR and work toward practical change. I will consider this a vacation from myself, where I will form coalitions, collaborations, and compromise.
I will do this in the hope that we can turn our government and country back around and move it a little in the direction of sanity.
I will want for nothing more.
We've had one year of turmoil to analyze and obsess and struggle for control. This has been healthy, a new path has been forged, and I do not regret it.
Nevertheless - it's time to move forward.
I will be part of the moving forward.

I stand with you. We don't have to sign in blood though, do we?

3. The idea of "practical change" is uppermost. Last week, in fun -- |
|
I responded that I would vote for a pile of SH** next year, as long as it had a "D" after its name. Seriously, though, I don't know what Oregon has in store for us as a practical matter. However, my husband went to one of the first start-up Democratic meetings and I intend to join him at others.
We will not stand by while others destroy our country. Thank you for speaking so eloquently for me and others.
In peace,

4. Pledge first to end DREs inclusion into our electoral process... |
|
I agree and support this pledge, but only if our vote remains pure and untouched or manipulated in 2006. Otherwise all our hard work and effort amounts to absolutely nothing. This is real folks, and it is time to wake up to this massive threat against our continuing Democracy.

8. Absolutely. Changing our voting system - to make it fraud-proof - is the |
|
first step, and we've made some pretty big strides since 2000 in getting the word out. Obviously we need to do more - but I think we're moving in a direction where it is getting harder and harder to fix the vote, more and more loopholes are getting closed in more and more places. The spotlight is shining in some long-darkened corners.
Tell you what, let's do it simultaneously - close as many loopholes for vote fraud as we can and run energized campaigns that win to such as degree that they make the fraudulent swing in their direction irrelevant. I honestly think it can be done if we spend more time discussing and cooperating and less time debating and dividing.

9. Yes - don´t get me wrong, I love playing Devil's Advocate - but for this |
|
year I am going to take a breath before I write and say, is this really necessary? Will this add productively to the discussion?
The main reason I wrote this post is that I found myself a couple times in the same day arguing with a friend about John Kerry. Finally I said to myself, why the hell am I wasting my time on this topic of all things when there are a million practical things that need to get done and only 11 months. It was just selfish.
