Ignorant forward from my dad about 'taking away Christmas' and my response
THE FORWARD:
Wow, this is what myself and a lot of others are feeling and just didnt know how to say it!!!

THIS WAS IN A TAMPA NEWSPAPER

Will we still be the Country of choice and still be America if we continue to make the changes forced on us by the people from other countries that came to live in America because it is the Country of Choice??????

Think about it!

All we have to say is, when will they do something about MY RIGHTS?

I celebrate Christmas...........but because it isn't celebrated by everyone.............we can no longer say Merry Christmas. Now it has to be Season's Greetings.

It's not Christmas vacation, it's Winter Break. Isn't it amazing how this winter break ALWAYS occurs over the Christmas holiday?

We've gone so far the other way, bent over backwards to not offend anyone, that I am now being offended. But it seems that no one has a problem with that.
This says it all!

This is an editorial written by an
American citizen, published in a
Tampa newspaper. He did quite a job; didn't he? Read on, please!

IMMIGRANTS,
NOT AMERICANS,
MUST ADAPT.
I am tired of this nation worrying about whether we
are offending some individual or their culture. Since the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11,
we have experienced a surge
in patriotism by the majority
of Americans. However...... the dust from the attacks had
barely settled when the "politically correct! " crowd began complaining about
the possibility that our patriotism was offending others.

I am not against immigration, nor do I hold a grudge against anyone who is seeking a better life by coming to America.
Our population is almost entirely made up of descendants of immigrants.
However, there
are a few things that those
who have recently come to
our country, and apparently some born here, need to understand.
This idea of America being a
multicultural community
has served only to dilute our sovereignty and our national identity. As Americans......
we have our own culture, our
own society, our own language and our own lifestyle. This culture has been developed over centuries of struggles, trials, and victories by millions of men and women who have sought freedom.

We speak ENGLISH, not Spanish, Portuguese, Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, Russian, or any other language.
Therefore, if you wish to become part
of our society, learn the language!

"In God We Trust" is our national motto. This is not some Christian, right wing, political slogan.. We adopted this motto because Christian men and women......on Christian principles.............
founded this nation..... and this is clearly documented.
It is certainly appropriate to display it
on the walls of our schools.
If God offends you, then I suggest you consider another part of the world as
your new home.........because
God is part of our culture.

If Stars and Stripes offend you, or
you don't like Uncle Sam, then you
should seriously consider a move
to another part of this planet.
We
are happy with our culture and have
no desire to change, and we really
don't care how you did things where
you came from.
This is
OUR COUNTRY,
our land, and our lifestyle.
Our First Amendment gives every citizen the
right to express his opinion and we
will allow you every opportunity to do so!
But once you are done complaining....... whining...... and griping....... about our flag.......
our pledge...... our national motto........or our
way of life....I highly encourage you to
take advantage of one other Great American Freedom.......

THE RIGHT TO LEAVE.

It is Time for America to Speak up
If you agree -- pass this along;
if you don't agree -- delete it!

AMEN

I figure if we all keep passing this to our friends
(and enemies) it will also, sooner or later
get back to the complainers, lets all try,
please!

MY RESPONSE:

To anyone who agrees with that forward: this is MY COUNTRY, too. No one has passed a law stating that you, if you're a Christian, can't say 'Merry Christmas'. Stop pretending to be persecuted. And I can say whatever the hell I want at whatever time of year I want! If you don't like it, too bad! Go watch Fox.

As far as having the right to leave, sometimes many of us wish we could! We CAN'T. It's not 1900. You can't just up and move to a foreign country whenever you want. We liberals have ALWAYS been here - the 'Founding Fathers' were extreme left-wingers to the British Crown, remember. And we are here to stay. Get used to it.

As far as this being a 'Christian' country founded on 'Christian' principles, that's not entirely true, but to get into an argument with someone who is unwilling to look at the facts beyond what they were taught in Sunday school and 1st grade is utterly pointless. If it makes you happy to believe that, believe it. But the fact is that most of the founding fathers were Deists, who believed in God but not, per se, in Jesus as savoir. This is why there is no specific mention of Jesus, Christianity, or even God in the Constitution. The Declaration of Independence, which was, in its day, a shockingly liberal document, a call for individual rights and against the tyranny of the 'divine right of kings', mentions a 'Creator', but that is all.

No one is stopping you from being a Christian. You can be whatever you want in this country; that's what's great about it. If you don't like it, move to somewhere where religion DOES control the government - someplace lovely like Saudi Arabia.

Now don't send me any more of this inane, illogical, lowest-common-denominator propaganda. And if you want to prove what a great American Christian you are, maybe you should start by going to church yourself. I follow my own conscience, and I defend your right to do the same.

Love,

Stella

1. You might also tell your dad that George and Laura sent
out a Holiday card this year and not a Christmas card.

Why does the President hate Christmas?

2. wow
My personal response is that I would never use a tone like that with my Dad. And on a practical level, if your Dad is truly just ignorant and not hopelessly brainwashed, I think a less confrontational/insulting and more explanatory/conciliatory response would probably be more effective.

But that's just me.

4. SSSTTEEEEEEEEEEELLLLAAAAAAAA!
Good for you. I'm amazed at how many people in this country need a good history and civics lesson. Got the same kind of e-mail this week from one who still believes that nonsense about being founded as a Christian nation.

And, your reference to moving to Saudi Arabia is priceless. I dare anyone to name ANY theocracy that has not failed or become a place that denies human rights to those who aren't part of the official religion.

Let religion be religion (whatever brand), and let the state be the state, and let not either one interfere with the other. There's a reason for the establishment and free exercise clauses in the constitution, and it's a damned good reason.

5. Tell your dad Merry Christmas since I know his religion.
Ask him what would he say to someone whose religion he doesn't know? It's common curteosy? Better yet tell your dad I wish him "Happy Birthday," and let me know how long it takes for him to know i am refering to baby Jesus :D

8. Great point, the founders never said Jesus, or God, it was
a universal Creator, which could be God, Jahweh, Allah, or Mithras or any other diety.

A + for a calm and reasoned reply to the annual stupid jingoistic America Love it or Leave it rambling RW crap spweed out by e-mail. it's so old now. yawn.

The other good point is that this is a fake issue. People can say what ever the hell they want to say for the holidays.

I, having heard about the birthday of the Roman Gd Mithras on 12-25, will now say: Merry Mithras Day, or Salve Mithras!, or more liekly my usual...Bah! Humbug!

10. Yeah, choice is fine with these people as long as it's THEIR choice.
I don't know when, if ever, they'll get it through their idiot minds (no offense to you or your dad) that THEY choose to celebrate Christmas and to say 'Merry Christmas', but when people choose to say 'Happy Holidays' instead it IS NOT AN ATTACK ON THEM! IT'S A PERSONAL CHOICE FOR THAT INDIVIDUAL, OR EVEN THAT COMPANY!

Sorry for yelling. :)

11. I would call bullshit on the original e-mail
Just like all the other crap floating around cyberspace that people forward without thinking. What Tampa newspaper? What was the name of the original author? When was it published? Was this truly an editorial??!!

Spare me.

These things are all easily debunked anymore; I for the life of me cannot understand why they are passed on as gospel. Seems that the idea of anti-Christianity, vague racism and other common denominators (persecuted WHITE Christians) always underly these specious missives.

12. Good point. Nobody is stopping your father from wishing Merry Christmas
to his Jewish friends, or Happy Kwanzaa to his muslim friends, or Happy Hanukkah to everyone down at his church.

It's a free country and you could walk out your door and do the above without an repercussions at all...except that everyone would think you had a problem with your brain.
