I always thought that Hillary had much more intelligence than this.

18. No she's not. It's a very limited bill.
The Bennett-sponsored measure outlaws a protester intimidating any person by burning the flag, lighting someone else's flag, or desecrating the flag on federal property.

What's wrong with these few specific restrictions?

20. Because it violates the First Amendment by criminalizing symbolic speech.
You can't tapdance around the Constitution by throwing in some bullshit language about "intimidating" people. The Constitution protects symbolic speech, even that which is obnoxious and offensive.

29. As Satchmo once said when asked what jazz is...
...if you have to ask, you'll never understand.

Criminalizing political speech helps crush dissent. Endorsing even this limited law places Hillary squarely in the McCarthyite tradition.

A sad, sad day for the Democratic Party: its leading candidate is revealed as an imbecile and a dangerous one at that. Best start working on Plan B.

7. I've stayed out of these as much as possible.
However, at this point, I would not support Hillary in the primaries. She's too conservative for me at the moment. Not a matter of bashing, just don't like some of the stuff she endorses now.

26. I don't support anyone right now - three years out
from the election.

But, even though I do have some serious issues with Ms. Clinton, I don't find the constant trashing of her here at DU very productive.

And most of it is trashing.

On the other hand, I'm beginning to think that that's what DU is for - a place to come and dump on your Democrat of choice.

So I guess it's ok.

they hate her just as much as most of the posters at DU seem to... or maybe it's the other way around...

actually, that's not completely true - many of my Republican relatives in upstate NY (where she actually holds office) have come to (begrudgingly, at least) respect her. So - I'm not convinced Hilary's move to the center is totally stupid. Like the OP is. Assuming that was the OP's point.

5. This is pathetic ... with all that's going on in the world
THIS is the issue she thinks will reverberate in the "Red States"?

She ought to try:

The disconnect between Wall Street and Main Street (especially in some of the less affluent "Red States").

Making us safer -- evidence the failing grades on the 9/11 commission "report card."

Restoring the public's trust in its representatives by getting rid of the culture of cronyism and corruption.

12. I'm still watching, but this really disappoints me.
I don't care if it is some sort of veiled "strategy" to prevent an even worse bill or amendment to pass. It makes the statement that you think flag burning should be illegal. I do not. And I don't support anyone who does.

16. If Hillary needs a better strategy, then do this:

  1. Talk about the issue of health care in this country
  2. Talk about the problems with our education system
  3. Talk about finding a way out of Iraq that makes some fucking sense
  4. Talk about the problem of greed in politics, the culture of corruption, and the malevolent influence of corporate special interest money on everything
  5. Talk about electoral reform/vote fraud
  6. Talk about the ruined towns across America as the result of free-trade policies, the empty rusting hulks of factories that used to be places of work for Americans

Talk about an issue that matters to the ordinary joe, for God's sake. These are just some of the things.

19. Flag burning...now what is that all about?
So Hilary thinks I can't dispose of my own personal property, in a responsible manner, as a protest against this country's government? I can burn anything else I own but not a flag. Will that ban soon include a Colorado state flag? Hmm....? :eyes:

Interesting that this is a bill and not an amendment.

23. Ragged Old flag - Good going.
Ragged Old Flag Lyrics
by Johnny Cash
< Download Johnny Cash Ringtones > < Send to a friend >

I walked through a county courthouse square
On a park bench, an old man was sittin' there.
I said, "Your old court house is kinda run down,
He said, "Naw, it'll do for our little town".
I said, "Your old flag pole is leaned a little bit,
And that's a ragged old flag you got hangin' on it".
He said, "Have a seat", and I sat down,
"Is this the first time you've been to our little town"
I said, "I think it is"
He said "I don't like to brag, but we're kinda proud of
That Ragged Old Flag

"You see, we got a little hole in that flag there,
When Washington took it across the Delaware.
and It got powder burned the night Francis Scott Key sat watching it,
writing "Say Can You See"
It got a rip in New Orleans, with Packingham & Jackson
tugging at its seams.
and It almost fell at the Alamo
beside the Texas flag,
But she waved on though.
She got cut with a sword at Chancellorsville,
And she got cut again at Shiloh Hill.
There was Robert E. Lee and Beauregard and Bragg,
And the south wind blew hard on
That Ragged Old Flag

"On Flanders Field in World War I,
She got a big hole from a Bertha Gun,
She turned blood red in World War II
She hung limp, and low, a time or two,
She was in Korea, Vietnam, She went where she was sent
by her Uncle Sam.
She waved from our ships upon the briny foam
and now they've about quit wavin' back here at home
in her own good land here She's been abused,
She's been burned, dishonored, denied an' refused,
And the government for which she stands
Has been scandalized throughout out the land.
And she's getting thread bare, and she's wearin' thin,
But she's in good shape, for the shape she's in.
Cause she's been through the fire before
and i believe she can take a whole lot more.

"So we raise her up every morning
And we bring her down slow every night,
We don't let her touch the ground,
And we fold her up right.
On second thought
I *do* like to brag
Cause I'm mighty proud of
That Ragged Old Flag"

Those people would rather cut off their hand than EVER, EVER, vote for Hillary.

And as we know, those people will cling to an erroneous idea until the bitter end.

She's a fool if she thinks she can attract them. I've been down in thar amongst 'em, and it ain't gonna happen.
