WASHINGTON — President Bush, warming up for a 2006 campaign to maintain GOP congressional majorities, is not shying from portraying the war in Iraq as a success and a reason to vote Republican.
"There are some who are arguing for a fixed timetable of withdrawal. I think it's the wrong policy, and so does Mark Kennedy," Bush said Friday at a Minneapolis fundraiser for the GOP candidate for U.S. Senate.
The race in Minnesota, a state Bush lost twice in the presidential elections, is among the crucial 2006 Senate battles. Republicans think Kennedy, a three-term House member and the likely GOP nominee, can capture the seat now held by retiring Democrat Mark Dayton. Kennedy could face any of several Democrats seeking that party's nomination.
So far, Bush's participation in the 2006 races has drawn welcomes from both sides, though some Republicans, wary of his low poll numbers, have been somewhat cool toward their leader.
