7. it's such a complex scenario
for most Murkans to grasp. If you leave out the geopolitics, it's just terror. If you leave out the incestuous relationship between corporations and the US government, it's just conspiracy theory crap. If you leave out the idealism of young Muslims who have nothing, it's just Imperialism as usual. If you leave out peak oil, the magnitude of the greed and corruption is out of scale.

I really liked this movie.

39. I know what you mean by "broken up."
early in the movie, the shifts between the various threads of the story were a bit disorienting

3. Tomorrow
matinee prices in the afternoon. But there's a movie at the IMAX I want to see as well. What to do? IMAX won't be out on video, "Syriana" will. That makes it a bit easier.

8. just so you support the film and the filmmakers
for even getting such a film into theaters.

If you rent the DVD when it's out, do a double feature with Syriana and The Constant Gardener.

it's an important message for Americans to see. Most don't understand the dynamics of our "oil Imperialism."

I think an average, relatively ignorant Murkan from the heartland would have their eyes opened about what is really going on in the Middle East.

I was especially glad they put that thread in there about suicide bombers. And how youth - with no right to chase girls before marriage end up extending their adolescence. And that throughout their lives - in muslim schools and by joining muslim groups - they get nurturing (manipulation too) and nice food. When the governance is not working for democracy and sharing wealth among people - or giving people citizenship if they have worked somewhere for 20 years (as perhaps the father did) there is a total lack of security and total poverty. And the muslim religion steps in to fill the void. And for every 100 great mullahs - all there has to be is one bad one. And that is all it takes to get generations after generation of suicide bombers.

The british army worked the same way in the 19th century. Young people were falling over themselves to get jobs as red coats for the lifestyle it allowed (food & drink). And though the soldier might end up with land or a full time job so to start a family - the suicide bombers seem to be promised the one thing poverty keeps them from. A little wealth - moving the mother from a country far away to the side of this lad's father.

Well done. I would not say that the movie was enjoyable - as much as it was highly informative.

33. But it is worse in the Middle East. In twenty years - with no dynamic
economies that would come from democracy and equalization of wealth - there will be even more poor and groundless, assetless, jobless, empoverished youth running around - putting off family (and thus sex) and living the lives of poor adolescent teenagers - when they should be adult men (working hard and working for family - or at least near family structure).

12. Caught most of Charlies Rose's interview of Gaghan (sp) yesterday
during some channel surfing, and I was aghast, really. Let's see what I can remember:

* he sat in a room with big oil execs -- it was a party at one of their penthouses -- and they were playing a game, trying to guess "which country's govt will be overthrown next for its oil assets." They guessed several different ones, and the oil exec who owned the penthouse said, "You're all wrong. It's Nigeria. And it cost $50 million." And he wasn't joking.

Gaghan said he'll never fly in small planes again. Too easy to rig things to make them crash, and not get caught.

Can't remember much more. Lotta discussion about movie making.

Does Charlie Rose have transcripts? It would be a good one to have.

14. Yes, I saw him too
He really shook me up and I'm not easily shaken anymore. The part about the rich guys in NYC deciding who to over throw next was expecially chilling. I haven't seen the movie yet, but I think it will all make a lot more sense having seen the interview.

17. I do remember one more thing
That yes, there were many things he learned while doing his research that he could not/would not/actively feared putting in his screenplay and film -- like people killled, how the White House implements some of its policies (he used a special term which made me think "assassination" but may not actually have meant that) and how those are carried out in the field.

19. Yes, the orders for some of these murders
came directly from the WH.

It fits right in with the story coming out about Bush issuing an executive order after 9-11 which he basically gave himself carte blanche to kill anyone, anywhere.

20. I Heard That It's Pretty Complex
So it would probably be better to watch on DVD. Then you could watch it multiple times. It would be easier to figure out that way. I *do* want to see it, but it will be on DVD.
