4. Well after the "provocative silhouette" it links to Olbermann, etc. on
MSNBC.. So, the ad is a true "tease" in that it sells a woman's silhouette to promote their "line up" as if a "supposedly Progress or "Secular Liberal" site would like to have a "bait and switch."

It's kind of nauseating :puke: to me as a DU Female...to be exploited this way...but what the hell...

Porn. Hey ladies it's not just for men any more.

See how selling sex to both sexes is making pornography the envy of the entertainment industry

"worst person in the world" series. They come back at the end to watch KO throw his papers over his desk and crack the glass but take turns to rush to turn off the tv before Rita's cacophony spews from her mouth. They rush upstairs and haul over to the tv in the nick of time, to deliver us from evil. New family tradition.

13. Well...it's sort of a hard issue for Dems to deal with.
So...because Dems champion the right to anyone to do whatever they want to do with their bodies...the Repugs and Organized Crime think that they can get a pass with us. Our need as Dems to champion "individual freedoms" sort of puts us in a bind with Porn and Violent/Sexual Video Games/DVD's/CD's and the rest. Tipper Gore went down over this issue.

Meanwhile we have our Fundie Zealot RW Christian porking little boys and little girls and into mega "sideline stuff" and we Dems are in "contortions" over the issue because...we believe so strongly in the right to do what one wants as long as it doesn't hurt anyone...and sexual freedom means "Roe vs. Wade," and nothing else.

It kind of "boxes us in" which is what the Repugs love...while they frolic everywhere.....all over the sexual, drug and gun dealing territory and we out here are left "debating the issues."

Also the fact that Repubs are involved with gay escort services, doesn't mean there isn't also such a thing as 'liberal porn'.

Moreover the problem with Gannon/Guckert isn't so much the fact that he's a gay escort, but the fact that he was/is a fake journalist, a RW propaganda operative.

30. Sorry, benburch -- that's not correct.
Here's the rule:

"You are permitted to discuss political or social issues relating to human sexuality, provided that you exercise the appropriate level of maturity, sensitivity, and discretion. Topics about sex are not permitted in the DU Lounge, although we may occasionally make an exception for articles posted from mainstream news sources."

In other words:

If you want to talk about sex, find another board. But if you want to talk about "political or social issues relating to human sexuality" you are welcome to do so.

If you're unable to discuss it with "maturity, sensitivity, and discretion" then your threads will get locked.

body including the penis be promoted by MSNBC on DU? I don't think so. Further when one attempts to read the story MSNBC claims to highlite, it does not exist. I'm not sure what type of "experiment" they are conducting, but I don't think I want to visit DU until that banner is gone.

44. Sorry the outline of a naked woman....
is at most erotica. Tittilates, but doesn't really show anything. And a draw neon tube outline? Truckers mud flaps are closer to erotica than that. If you've ever called someone beautiful you've objectified them, basically blows that whole argue.

Edited on Mon Dec-12-05 12:11 PM by mzmolly
The fact that you can say that women are used in most porn (so it's ok to post porn type images everywhere) while claiming that women are not "objectified" in the same statement speaks volumes.

BTW, when I call someone "beautiful" I'm speaking about their ENTIRE person not their anatomy.

58. Porn objectifies BOTH men and women
that's kinda the point...

Sitcoms and the rest of TV objectifies people too. It's called entertainment.

So go watch your soaps and read your romance novels, etc., as long as we have NO naked women in our society, all will be well.

is being "objectified." And, frankly many of the men in porn are downright repulsive.

Sorry, I don't think the objectification is quite (equal.)

60. Actually...
given the abundance of gay male porn, I wouldn't jump to saying women are in most porn. And even if they are, so what? And any concept of beauty involves objectification. Part and parcel of beauty.

I dont' come here to see trash like that. Sorry. And Yes, I am liberal. But I am female, and I am interested in politics and laughs, not seeing porn ads. There is more than enough of this out there in the MSM, why do DUers need to be subjected to it?

You made a lot of good points throughout this thread.

What seems odd to me is that it's supposedly aimed at porn for women - is the target market supposed to be lesbians? Would they be attracted to the neon porn women? (Seems like a fairly small market).

Seems to me it's for men - regardless of what it says, "Porn. Hey ladies it's not just for men any more."

You do have to wonder about the marketing to liberals aspect. Or if they don't care if they turn women off. If it were really directed toward women - I think they would use a different image.

site also has the same ad up. So, it looks like it was part of a Liberal Advertising package. (or, maybe the RW sites got the ad, too..I don't really go to those sites for news, though).

Yes..what you say is true...it seems to be very contradictory in who is the "target" for the ad. Do they think liberal sites have more Gay/Lesbians and so the promo would appeal to them? Was that their purpose? Wouldn't it make more sense to advertise Chris Matthews big PlameGate special which aired tonight, though? Why promote "Porn Valley," on a liberal news blog?

I find it offensive to see on a liberal site...hawking MSNBC and the topic being Porn rather than Poltical in tone. But, most here have no problem with it..

But I don't like seeing the truck driver porn woman. It represents an obnoxious POV as far as I'm concerned.

P.S. I noticed the feministing women have the blogads, also - but they have a different representation of a naked women on their ad. hmmm.

this shit is being thrown in our face, as those that support porn say, what about my right to see. what about my fuckin right to not see. every single friggin image in life, where ever i go, there is a naked woman to see. and i am the messed up one? even driving down a f***in hiway with my 3 and 6 yr old boys. trucker with a porn picture on his window, myself and the boys met to a female with her legs spread in our face as we drive by.

right guys. lets talk about your friggin right. lol lol like the christian persecution going on.

38. So now there is a new image
Edited on Mon Dec-12-05 10:49 AM by bloom
and the type is:

"Porn. It's jumped out of the seedy theaters and back-alley video stores, and into the family computer.

See where it's heading next."

It sort of reminds me - but it's not nearly as bad - as the time when my kids were little and watching cartoons and an advertisement ran during the Saturday morning cartoons - about a news show on how much porn had infiltrated television and they showed examples.

So now you go to the latest page and here is this line drawn image of a naked woman jumping out of your computer at you. It's like it's saying - "you can't get away from it - even if you want to." (I guess that's the point, huh? )

But it's still seems that MSNBC is just trying to cash in on sex/porn their own selves.

humping pole in high heels with ever story they were going to tell about, oh the woman dragged by hair as a couple men paid her, while they carried around guns hunting????? and like three other stupid shit stories like that. i saw the same crotch humping that pole at least 50x's in a couple days.

yes, that is what msnbc is doing. then we are all suppose to pretend we arent bothered.

i had two boys watching a woman having an orgasm in a shower when they were 5 and 7, watching animal planet one night. and yes my kids were around with the porn advt on cartoon that you saw. and history channel, lordy, a year ago about something. even my slut brother was bothered by that one, with his ten yr old daughter watching history channel a lot.

59. Oh come on
My wife enjoys porn. We switched magazine distributors recently, so we now send back strips (just the front cover with the bar code) -- the result being, we get free magazines now too. I always bring the gay porn home for her.

And the term for masturbation for a woman is "jill off", not "jack off"

What other images in our society do you seek to ban from public? Obesity? Smoking? How about the medical ads on TV? I get symptoms for everything from a heart attack to acid reflux disease when I see those ads... Lets ban everything *I* find offensive.

MSNBC To Flood Internet With $1M Ad Campaign...

The New York Times | Posted December 12, 2005 11:47 AM
READ MORE: NBC

The MSNBC cable network plans to flood the Internet this week with its largest concentrated online pitch, running advertising on hundreds of Web sites and blogs. The cost of the campaign, to promote three prime-time programs, is estimated at just under $1 million.

MSNBC, owned by Microsoft and the NBC Universal division of General Electric, will promote the shows - with their hosts, Keith Olbermann, Rita Cosby and Joe Scarborough - in ads that are to start appearing tomorrow and continue all day Wednesday. Some ads will promote segments on the shows about life online, like how marketers sponsor "viral" video clips that consumers can forward to each other.

65. a funny. ya... so you get porn and i dont
had computer on sitting at kitchen table and husband comes home early to take me out. he comes into our room as i am brushing teeth, "it is ok for you to have porn and not me". i am laughing and laughing. oh..... and there you go. bold and clear on our political board. will have to remember to exit out of board when i leave the room, after all.... as a parent,.... it is my job to switch the button off

and before anyone thinks hubby is being deprived, he was joking, cause he knows how i feel, he respects it and he doesnt feel deprived.

but, when i told him it was msnbc and not a porn site, he was surprised and then a little pissed that is what they gave a dem site for advt, he thinks it says something.

Here's an article that tries to look at the issue from all sides - including women who got hooked,

One 35-year-old married woman said the pictures (especially those depicting S&M scenarios) "would haunt me day and night." The habit began to erode her marriage. "My husband could no longer satisfy me".

http://www.psychologytoday.com/rss/pto-20050808-000007.html

(and for the pro-porn people - the article does discuss positive aspects of porn as well)

Here's an article from MSNBC from 5 years ago - same subject: Addicted to online porn
