Send these soldiers in Iraq a Holiday Card
or, better yet, a care package. It's considered domestic mail to send things to military APOs and FPOs, so a card costs 37 cents and a flat rate box can be mailed for $7.70. I buy used books and DVDs and send them via media mail-- which is the cheapest postage of all.

Of course, keep your message upbeat-- this is supposed to help their morale, not depress them even more. Most of the soldiers really like drawing from kids, so if you can tuck one of those in your letter or package, then it will probably go up on a wall in Iraq somewhere.

These guys deserve all the support we can give them. It's hard enough to be sent off to fight a war where the objectives are clear. But these guys are being sent into harm's way-- and deployed over and over again-- in this sham of a war. I really feel for them, especially at the holidays.

Some of these kids join the military right out of high school and come from broken homes. That may be one of the reasons why this particular group of soldiers gets little support from home.

If you want to send more cards, there are plenty more addresses at

www.anysoldier.com under the "Where to Send" tab.

Thanks for helping out!

From the Soldier:

12 Dec 2005:

We are a Infantry Company from Kansas and parts of OK and MO, we were called up AUG 2005 and will be on tour till NOV 2006. We are the front line defense for the Baghdad area and most of these men spend most of the time working 12hour shifts without days off. My platoons don't really get any mail at all and its depressing to see other platoons always recieving about three times as much as mail as we do. I don't know the entire reason why we don't get any mail, but I figure that requesting cards, letters and care packages might boost morale in my platoons.

My men are tough soldiers and very dicipline, they never complain and the best moment this year was when a middle school wrote us, it was the first time I saw my men write anything just to thank the kids for their time, so if anything, my men don't take anything for granted. About 90% of them are blue collar and everyday men that work on your car, house, and city services. I hope for any help. Thank You for your time.

Our living conditions is barracks, we use 220 electricity, we have microwaves and laundry services, I'm representing two platoons, we have no female soldiers.

Any food items are nice

2. I brought this letter to my daughter's pre-school
just now, and her class (15 kids) is going to make cards for them (they are 3-year olds). The teacher was happy to do this. I'm going to put the cards in a care package (with a letter) and send it off. It would be nice if some other classes in her school take this letter and send cards, too.

I hope these soldiers get an avalanche of cards, mail, etc.

Thank you for posting this.

12. TexasLawyer.... I've been looking for YOU!!!
To thank you for telling me about that fantastic site! You made my "war" on commercial christmas a joy! Turned my negative attitude around.

$$$ are going to preserve the sanity of these brave men and women.

There's a navy unit from MS who lost their homes and didn't even get a chance to be with their families before they were redeployed to Iraq.
They have nothing and have missed the past 3 Christmases.

I've got my boxes all packed and custom forms 2976-A all filled out.
7 boxes tommorow. 5 more waiting for letters, the hard part.

I've got Sean's group package with a great game. Not to be duplicated. I try to put lots of fun into it too. What a great idea to have the leaders giving these packages to the ones who don't get anything and they usually share with everyone.

People from Canada send too.
I really like reading the stories from those who can get to the computer about the fellowship between everyone and how they are trying to keep their moral up. When mail arrives, their days go so much better

I posted this yesterday. Thanks again. Keep plugging it and I will too.

14. Question about mailing care package:
Is there a speacial "flat-rate box" that you buy at the Post Office to pack and mail items in?

i don't know if I need to go to the PO first to buy this box first, take the box home to package stuff, then go back to mail... not to be a knucklehead... I'm trying to be efficient.

thanks.

15. hello again, sent my package just now
Edited on Thu Dec-15-05 12:46 PM by npincus
mags, dvds, games, candy. misc. stuff, holiday cards from my daughters pre-school, and a letter from me! It weighed 17 lbs and cost $12 (box was too big for standard flat-rate, but was surprisingly cheap to send).

Anyway, TexasLawyer, just wanted to thank you again for posting this.
