5. I think that the Iranian President knew exactly what he was saying

and said it with purpose. The Iranians are not stupid. They have been conducting diplomacy and playing power politics for nearly three thousand years (they once owned Israel and Judah, remember), and this is a classic bait job. If Israel stays quiet and does nothing, then Iran looks pretty good in Muslim/Arab eyes (not to mention Persian eyes), if Israel escalates tension then Iran is in a better position to say that their nuclear development must go forward (and there are undoubtedly many more facets to this than I am capable of seeing). But we need to not lose sight of the fact that the Iranians very often are speaking to others than the West and its allies, and that there is more "public opinion" than just in the West...

It is so funny how Americans think all international diplomacy is directed solely towards them. I know there are some who would think that Iranians are Arabs-but don't tell my Persian friends that ! The whole political scene in the Middle East goes back-sometimes way way back-to fully understand why people feel the way they do.
