Rich white trash in N.Orleans don't want their darkeys back

in http://www.spiegel.de/panorama/0,1518,390507,00.html, "Klassenkampf in der Geisterstadt" ("Class warfare in the ghost town"), Der Spiegel (German newsmag on the level of Time, Newsweek) reports that rich whites from New Orleans with claims to long-term residency are agitating again (still?) that NOLA be rebuilt as an affluent white paradise, and that "negro gangs" (quoting the gentleman interviewed in the article, a certain Ashton O'Dwyer, NOLA lawyer and 5th-generation rich NOLA boy) should be excluded from the new city.

While this is not generally new news, and the usual suspects prove they can be relied on to behave like, well, the usual suspects, it is new news that this is still going on (though hardly surprising, given that most of the rich place top priority on maintaining their wealth), and that these people have the nads to make their statements without obscuring their faces or changing their names.

Mr O'Dwyer follows up his proposal for a new NOLA with the old threat "otherwise we're outta here" (speaking of his wealthy ilk). Well, again, don't let the door hit your fat ass on the way out, and take your horse you rode in on (the antecedent to that phrase is implied here) with you. A NOLA which doesn't have the "benefit" of their economic activity but is a better place for all the people to live (how much of NOLA's legendary corruption and economic stratification exists precisely because of the presence and activities of Mr O'Dwyer and his ilk ?) would be a better choice to begin with.

They're going to find out how much of the infrastructure they depended on, from city buses to supermarkets, are simply not going to be there any more without a whole lot of people to run them and to provide services for the people who run them.

Personally, I say give them what they want. Let them travel 100 miles round trip to find a decent grocery store in whatever labor town gets rebuilt on high ground a comfortable distance away from the rich folks. Let them have a Disneyland French Quarter, squeaky clean and artificial, without all the street life and vibrant music scene that only the poor folks in the rest of the city could provide.

The whole area will be deep under water within the next 100 years (sooner if another massive hurricane hits, and one probably will), thanks to the loss of the wetlands and the oil pumping which has lowered the whole area.

I can't think of a bunch of people who deserve drowning more.

15. I love New Orleans...

That city had a character and personality that was unequaled anywhere else. The southern hospitality that I felt everywhere I went is what draws me to that city.

And it wasn't coming from the rich white trash. It was coming from the now- displaced people of color who may never be able to return.

They can turn their city into whitesville, but nobody who loves the REAL New Orleans will want to visit. Bye bye tourist dollars.
