22. It's a tv program. Santos makes the mistake to choose someone w/o gravitas |
|
making for great sturm und drang drama and higher ratings. (Will Santos be able to recover from this error in judgement? Tune in next week...) And besides, I liked Rob Lowe's character. Couldn't we say that he had...oh, I don't know, served in Iraq, or written a book giving us the answer to some universal question, or something like that, thereby giving himself the gravitas? After all, he's been gone a while.
Please?

as a character. I wish they'd at least cycle him back in for half seasons. Though he'd make a great VP as well.

11. Could you provide a cite on that item in the Constitution? |
|
Modern political practice is not to nominate candidates for President & VP from the same region of the country, much less from the same state, in order to maximize the geographic reach of the ticket for Electoral College votes.
I can't recall anything in the Constitution mandating this.

15. The Constitution says nothing of the sort |
|
Better do a reread.
The Constitution says an elector cannot vote for a VP and Prez both from the same state.
Two very different things.
If Cheney was ruled from Texas, then the Texas electors could not have voted for him for VP. If no oner has a majority of electoral votes for VP, then the senate would pick the new VP. That would have been interesting as I think the senate was split 50-50 once Jeffords switched.
Maybe he would have ended up VP. Or maybe Lieberman would have been VP and then would have formally changed parties. Or maybe a Dem or two would have voted for Cheney just to give Bush what he wanted.
Anyway, the Constitution does not say you can't have a Prez and VP from the same state.

31. wow, settle down people. |
|
I know I wasn't quoting directly-- it's just easier to say "Pres & VP can't be from the same state" then saying "the electors shall... vote by ballot for President and Vice-President, one of whom one, at least, shall not be an inhabitant of the same state as themselves."

29. That particular show......... |
|
There was someone missing in the group waiting for the new President - and that was Leo McGarry.
So, I assumed that his absence meant Santos/Garry had won the election.
But, what if that wasn't what they had planned?
What if Leo had already died?
That's too spooky even for me to contemplate.
But, there WAS something doomed about Leo.
Christ, I'm gonna miss John Spencer....................

10. President Bartlett's National Security Advisor |
|
I don't recall the charactor's name. She would be perfect. Leo was chosen because of his foreign policy experience and this woman would certainly bring that. Plus, she is a Black woman, this would help to ease the tensions between the Hispanic & Black comunities.
WOW! I love my idea, if I do say so myself!
Nancy. Is her name Nancy???

because he is from TX and you cannot have both from the same state.
I think at this point there are four episodes in the can, taking the storyline through early-mid October. Since this is the last season it is unlikely they are going to go to the expense of hiring a name like William Devane (Berryhill) to play the last few episodes. They also will not disregard Spencer's death. Fans will want to see how Leo's passing will impact President Bartlet and Josh and not acknowledging the loss would be a terrible slap in the face, both to the fans and to John Spencer. How they will do that, I don't know.
Since the show is going off the air, they can pretty much do anything. I wouldn't be surprised if they introduced a new character - some old friend/army buddy of Santos - and have him be the VP nominee. They are bringing back Rob Lowe for the series finale, so they might also have Sam Seaborne become the new VP, hoping he can swing CA back to the Dems. Realistically, no Dem is going to win without CA.
I believe Vinick is going to win anyway, probably in a landslide. Altough I could see them ending the series on election night, with some news anchor saying, "We can now predict that the president-elect will be..." (fade to black, roll credits)

but TV Guide has reported that it is the final season and that Rob Lowe has been invited back for the series finale. http://www.tvguide.com/News/AskAusiello/default.htm?cmsRedir=true&rmDate=12142005&cmsGuid={24B6F544-CF25-4D2D-86D2-3E32E9B74288}&cmsSrch=true Question: Please give me some scoop on The West Wing. — Emily
Ausiello: We're going to see Toby (Richard Schiff) again right before the big election — on Halloween, to be exact — when he returns home to take his son, Huck, trick-or-treating. Oh, and the show isn't returning next year. Nothing official from NBC yet, but reliable sources tell me it's all over in May.

27. This is what I had thought. |
|
I was afraid that when they moved it to Sunday it was going to be the beginning of the end, but I truly hope they decide to continue with the new administration. I just wish they'd get the election over with already and get going. At the beginning of the season, I thought they'd do it in real election cycle time and hold the election last month, which they obviously did not do. Now I've hoped they'd have the election right after the holiday break, but it doesn't sound like it.

30. See above. The show is too expensive and its ratings are garbage |
|
Averaging fourth place on Sunday nights with around a 5.4 rating. Even the debate episode only got a 7.7 and 11 share. The fans that propelled the show to high ratings and Emmy wins deserted it with the Zoey kidnapping fiasco and the so-so season that followed. I think it has hit its stride again with the campaign stories, but at this point the audience is gone. The show is very expensive at this point, and replacing Sheen's salary with that of either Smits or Alda wouldn't cut costs much.
I think that if ratings had rebounded this season the show would continue, but with ratings so low NBC is going to drop it.

14. Since they've probably already taped the election episode, |
|
I think they'll keep the episodes they've already done. Then they'll have Leo suffer another heart attack and die. Then Santos will have to select a new VP.
