I would like to give senator Specter a high 5 for his courage.
We don't often see the glimmer of honesty in any republicans actually being concerned that Bush is running rampant over the constitution.

Senator Arlen Specter has not only indicated he intends to grill Alito about many concerns he has about his qualifications for the supreme court, but now he has blatantly come out and unequivocally said he will chair a senate judiciary committee hearing on Bush spying on American citizens as soon as the senate reconvenes next year. This is going to make it impossible to call it a partisan witch hunt.

I don't care if he's republican or not, I think we should salute him and let him know we appreciate this integrity. I know I sure as hell do. :patriot: :patriot: :patriot:

3. Yes I am sure
That's why I'm making this commendation. The aspens are turning.

From CBS News...

"There is no doubt that this is inappropriate," said Sen. Arlen Specter, R-Pa., chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee. He said there would be hearings early next year and that they would have "a very, very high priority." He wasn't alone in reacting harshly to the report. Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., said the story, first reported in Friday's New York Times, was troubling."

2. Specter's not a company man
He's a conservative, so he usually agrees with the Republicans, but he doesn't fall for a lot of their more questionable crap. I remember he voted against convicting Clinton, and to make sure his vote stood out, he voted the old English "Not proven, so not guilty."

I don't really like him. I just don't turn purple with hate when I hear his name. That's the highest compliment I can give a Republican.

6. Doesn't everyone realize how huge this is?
He is the CHAIRMAN of the REPUBLICAN controlled judiciary committee and he his going to hold an unlawful conduct hearing against his republican president. For an act that could lead to impeachment.

It don't get much huger than that.

I wonder if Specter likes Bush. I hope a democrat helps him with that since he did the "magic bullet" theory. I hope they bring them all down. Will they just bring down Bush or anyone who helped him?

5. I can't agree.
I think Specter is doing nothing more than staking out his territory.

The first rule in cover-up is to rig the investigation. Specter's doing exactly what he did for the Warren Commission.

7. That would be moronic BT
There are going to be democratic members on this committee. The questions are going to be fast and furious with nowhere to hide. If he had any intentions of covering for Bush, the last thing he would be doing is holding a hearing in the judiciary committee which will be televised to the nation.

There will be no stopping this once it gets going.

8. You apparently have no idea how Senate investigations go.
Specter would control all evidence and subpoena power.

Specter is a Bush shill. He's never been anything else. From JFK, to John Roberts, to this, he's always been a Bush shill.

9. Bookmark this and we'll see if you feel the same way
at the end of January. Bet you won't. I also bet Bush is sweating bullets over this. You think he's saying "oh goody, Arlens' going to have a hearing about my spying, I'm so grateful." We'll just see.

20. Look, the Bushes have been working on this for over a year.
They knew it was coming for over a year. They made arrangements with their political allies long ago. If you think they were just sweating it out all this time, you are mistaken. No chance. None.

When the news broke, Specter jumped on it without any hesitation. Didn't check it out or anything. He already knew. It was a part of the plan. He's in the bag. I'd bet my car on it, but it'd be hard to prove.

This does not mean he will be able to kill it, but he will do whatever he can to protect the Bushes. This is how things work. John Warner pulls similar stunts.

11. He wasn't a Bush shill
when he blasted Bush about the Harriet Miers nomination. I think he cares much more about the Judicial Branch & Constitution than he does about Bush. The hearings are going to be must-see tv.

16. I think the whole
Miers thing was a smoke and mirror thing. I still don't trust Specter especially since I found he was the one who came up with the "magic bullet" theory with JFK when it's purely impossible.

12. He also says he wants to grill Alito
on his opinion of Bush's claim that these new powers he is freely exercising are rooted in the Constitution. That is going to get interesting.

18. My feelings too.
I think there are going to be threads plastered all over DU with dozens of the green jumping Gumby showing how happy we are about the damage his hearings are doing to Bush. I expect it to be of volcanic proportions.

We'll see how prophetic I am.

17. but at the same time... Specter is not so grand.
Last week he tried to shove a poorly conferred Patriot Act down our throats.

As Chief Counsel for the Warren Commission, he came up with the 'single bullet theory' of the JFK assassination...snore.

But on his list of accomplishments add his work on stem cell research with Harkin.

Right around the time of his Patriot Act leadership we get a new Bush scandal. It seems to have real legs. Conservatives are talking about this and they aren't happy.

If we get a new fitzmas Christmas we a beautiful start for the New Year.

Feingold got a nice bump in Q ratings for this.
