So what mechanism exists right this moment to shut down
illegal, warrantless tapping and spying of American citizens? Can someone/anyone go and get a cease and desist order? Bush has announced that he plans to continue as he pleases. Can anyone stop him?

If BuschCo and company had "briefed" Congress that they were kidnapping and renditioning Quakers because they were a threat to our national security because they are anti-war - is there something in place right this moment that could have saved our home-grown Quakers?

Why wouldn't the next step after wire-tapping be "disappearing"? What evidence has this administration shown that they are capable of any kind of self-restraint?

1. There is no self-restraint with these bozos
I'm glad to see members of Congress who will stand up to them. As for stopping wiretaps, etc--maybe someone more talented than I knows what one can do. If they come for me, I plan to make a lot of noise-maybe low tech, but the only thing I can think of doing right now.

3. The only entity capable of stopping this monster is Congress
They'll have to impeach, try, and remove him.

4. Or at least pass a law
expressly forbidding it - one that said the people who were doing the actual tapping could be held criminally responsible. It would need a 2/3 vote though, Bush would veto it for sure.

6. There already IS a law.
There is also a Constitution.

He's said he has no intention of following either. Neener.

8. Ok granted but
enforcing that law, or having Bush's actions declared unconstitutional means going to the courts, and it could take decades - what I'm saying is that they could pass a law specifically and expressly forbidding the specific action right now.

5. Excellent Point!
There are many "mechanisms" in place to deter bank robbers, and shoplifters. So to with many other crimes.

Why is it so easy for the White House to not only have access to, but authority to authorize, without a FISA warrant, wiretapping?

7. Simple.... get everyone and I mean everyone to call Pakistan,
Saudi Arabia or Afghanistan... and use keywords in their "conversation"... even if it is only to explain that they wanted to order some balm, or they wanted to set a new precedent, or perhaps they need to find out what some people go to sea for. That should just about knot up their little game.

10. My husband and I are victims of dark humor
We realize this is no laughing matter... As we were lying in bed the other night and talking about the day's news, we happened onto this line of thinking. He suggested we call all our friends and have them call all their friends and we all then phone overseas... to whom would not matter... our part of the conversation would just be a series of words: "Osama... Saddam... Bush... bomb... plane... terrorist... strike... Jesus... Christians... hog lots... Americans... corporate.... Social Security... "

At the time, the whole idea had us rolling around laughing. The more I think about it now, it might be the only way to overwhelm out-of-control conversation monitoring.

9. I guess a citizen's arrest is out of the question
Sharpshooters would turn you into a bag of sludge if you got within 1000 feet of him.

Ah, well.

THEY can get past the sharpshooters on the roof. Gee, I hope the dweeb reads DU... right before going to bed

Be so fun to think of his swaggering, surly, petulant SELF in his PJs (with the special presidential seal on the pocket) sitting in the dark sucking the corner of his blankie, all... :scared:
