Skateboarder dies after pickup hits him

Web Posted: 12/21/2005 12:00 AM CST
San Antonio Express-News

A teenager was killed and another youth was injured when a pickup jumped a sidewalk and struck them both Tuesday night, police said.

The driver of the pickup fled and had not been found late Tuesday.

The incident occurred at about 7:45 p.m. when an 18-year-old and a 16-year-old were riding skateboards south on the sidewalk of Bulverde Road near Thousand Oaks Drive.

A white pickup traveling north veered onto the sidewalk, hitting them, according to a San Antonio police traffic detective.

The 16-year-old boy's leg was shattered, and he died from the impact.

The 18-year-old man was taken with a broken arm in good condition to Northeast Baptist Hospital.

Police did not release the names of the two youths.

Investigators still were trying to identify and find the driver of the pickup, which had a broken headlight and a broken bug guard.

4. I'm sooooo sorry.
 Life is a mystery. The person who hit them was probably drunk. What a terrible waste of life.

10. Either drunk or he was the type of idiot that I used to deal with all the
time back in my skateboarding days. There's a certain element that lives off harrassing people like skaters. They'd swerve at us to scare us off our boards, try to start fights for no reason at skate spots, throw crap out of cars at us, etc.

It's just as likely that this guy was a "jock" or something of the sort trying to piss these kids off and lost control of his vehicle, then panicked and left the scene.

13. OMG, If found to be intentional, this could be a murder 1 charge.

20. Only if it's found that the driver intended to hit them, if his intent was
to frighten them and he lost control, it's vehicular manslaughter.

But, either is merely speculation at this point. I'm just going by what I used to experience back when I was a skater.

6. I'm so sorry to hear this. I believe they'll find the driver of the PU.
I used to live in SA, and somehow a story hits you harder when you know the place they're talking about, and have been to that Hospital too.

I feel pretty sure there's more damage to that PU than a broken headlamp and bug guard too, and the driver will be found and severly punished.

18. One doesn't just "jump" a sidewalk.
This was almost certainly intentional, from the sound of it.

My sympathies to all concerned, and I hope the criminal is apprehended promptly.

9. How terrible.

I witnessed a lady get hit by a car just last week, evidently her arm was shattered (considering how fast the car was going, she was very lucky).

I'm so sorry :( What an awful time of year for this to happen.

19. The driver stopped at the scene for this one.
It was a young girl (maybe 25 or so). Looked to me like every window in her car was iced up and she couldn't see jack out her windows (plus while I was on the phone to 911, she was talking to someone else on her cell saying her windshield wipers weren't working).

The lady who got hit never lost consciousness and asked me to call her office to let them know she wouldn't be in. So, since I had the number in my cell phone, I called them on Monday and they gave me an update. Evidently, her arm was the only injury, the hospital released her that day, but she went back because the pain was too bad. They admitted her to the hospital and will be doing pretty extensive surgery on the arm (it was pretty much shattered, so no way a cast alone could help). But, from what I understand, she had no other internal injuries, so should be relatively okay. The only thing is she works as a nurse in a rest home, so she's probably not going to be able to return to work for a long time (can't exactly turn a patient and such if you have pins and plates in a still healing arm).

11. How sad for your son...and you
I have experience with this with my oldest son, too(his friend killed in a car accident). The best thing to do,in my humble opinion,is to keep it in the foreground.mention his friend by name, and let your son talk as he sees fit.Sometimes, you may have to initiate the conversation.Teenage boys hold their feelings inside. You can help him grieve by letting him talk.

How awful for the family and a horrible time of year for it to happen too. My condolences.

What kind of person would strike another with their vehicle and then take off? What kind of awful heartless thing to do is that?

25. I truly hope your son is dealing okay with this. My heart goes out to this
boy's family and friends. Losing a child/family member/friend is difficult any time but this time of year makes it even more so if they celebrate any of the holidays. :-(

Hopefully they'll be able to find and properly prosecute the driver so the family will have some justice and closure.

26. Condolences to all
I lost 5 friends when I was in my teens, all at different times. It just feels so unreal.

I think it was harder for guys in the group. Girls wept and grieved more easily, not that it was easy for us.

Parents are a base, but a lot of it needs to be worked through with friends. Maybe you could encourage him to have some over.

My heart goes out to those parents, it is just unimaginable. I'm sorry so many parents have to face that grief. I hate death that is so young or seems so unfair.
