Need a union to join? Here's one that could help us all...
Thanks Koko01 for originally posting this:

New UNION forming for NonUnion Workers and Retirees (AFL-CIO)! Must Read
Great new Website, affiliated with AFL-CIO for all of us who are sick and tired of the Downsizing/Merging and Layoffs which follow. Now is a chance for us all to join and have a voice in a NEW AMERICAN LABOR MOVEMENT which can include all of us: Techies, Clericals, Corporate Employees, Service Industry workers...all of us who are not currently eligible for a Union where we have a voice. Let's do this and make it work for us. And for those who are concerned about Labor Union's bad reputation the past few decades, we can work to make sure that the corruption is kept out by vigilant monitoring of elected officials.

It's time for all of us to unite and have a voice. We need lobbyists who work for US. Think of the money we could raise that would send the K-Street crowd out of DC. Think of how we could have a united voice to go after our Senators and Congresspersons who continue to give away our rights to the Corporations.

Check out their website. It looks really interesting and I'm going to join and donate. The time has come!

Help Build a Workers' Movement. Nonunion workers and retirees are invited to join the people power of America's union movement and help make America work for all of us. (credit to Buzzflash for posting this headline and the link to the website)

2. Thank you am already a member -- and yes every DU person should join:
say it loud and say it proud. If we are progressives we should walk the walk as well as talk the talk. Those who are not should stop pretending and join the Republican party.

(I'm a former Newspaper Guild member too; former because Guild membership is dependent on employment and not something you carry with you embodied in a union card as you do in, say, seafaring or the construction trades.)

8. The USWA has an associate memebrship as well.
Check this out...
http://www.steelworkers-usw.org/usw/program/content/1261.php

Associate Membership
A new union.
For anyone.
Anytime.

In response to current economic conditions and the plight of working families in the United States, the United Steelworkers (USW) recently voted to create a new category of membership that welcomes people like you to join our international labor union as an Associate Member.

A real advantage that union members have always enjoyed is a package of comprehensive benefits for themselves and their families.

Now you can join the Steelworkers as an Associate Member and get access to union-only benefits like confidential workplace assistance, health care savings, job training and educational opportunities, and other features designed to safeguard workers’ rights and protect you families’ economic future. You’ll also be eligible for discounts on travel, entertainment, rental cars, computers, wireless service and much more

You’ll join over 500,000 other Steelworkers in fighting to advance the well-being of ordinary citizens across the country. You’ll become a part of a powerful force that will give students, working people and the middle-class the clout to go head-to-head with the corporate special interests that now dominate our country.

You’ll help build a dynamic new movement to organize statewide and national campaigns to end the senseless exportingn jobs, form "blue-green" (labor and environmental) alliances, guarantee healthcare, press for fair treatment of working families everywhere and a whole lot more.

The USW has been at the forefront of the fight against the abuses of corporate power that have robbed working people of their retirement savings and outsourced American jobs. We have a long and proud tradition of allying with progressive forces for economic and social justice around the world.

This category of membership represents a new direction in the labor movement. For the better part of a century, American trade union membership has been limited to workers in designated collective bargaining units. Now, the Steelworkers are opening our ranks to anyone who shares our commitment to the welfare’s working people.

Many of these union benefits can be yours even if you don’t work in a union shop – and even if you currently don’t have a job!

If you are a student or currently unemployed, an Associate Membership costs just $20 a year. If you’re working, you can make a single annual membership payment of just $40 – or choose to pay in quarterly installments of $12 each.

Can we count on you to join today?

11. You realize that some people would lose their jobs if they
joined a union of any flavor.

Yes - as hard as it is to believe - the red states don't like unions. Of course, many have bought into propaganda, but the "right to work" states (or as I call them - including my own - "right to get fired" states) have many an employer who would oust an employee for joining a union - any union.

I'm just pointing that out.

12. I suggest you read Howard Zinn's chapters on the rise of
unions in America. It's never an easy choice, especially when you are fighting corporations, but the right to work for practically nothing isn't a good option either.

13. Ive been fired for union activities
I worked at a place in Ohio , which is a strong union state, and I was pushing to bring a Union in. They cut my job a few weeks later and said they were cutting back on labor costs by downsizing the labor pool. I heard they changed the job title name and hired a new guy later. Same job, different title.

Yes they do fire people but how else can we change the slide if not for organizing?

14. It's going to come to a point where people will get desperate enough
to be treated right that they'll say to hell with it and join.
