What are your three biggest political issues?
Edited on Wed Dec-21-05 10:00 PM by jaredh
I know this has probably been asked before, but I want to know what three issues are most important to you, personally.

Mine are:

1. Health care
2. Organized labor and worker's rights
3. Civil Liberties (I take a libertarian view of civil liberties i.e. pro-choice, pro-gay marriage, pro-gun, anti- patriot act, etc.)

Edit: Changed #3 from Quality educational system to Civil Liberties

Also fighting for the #3 slot is Health Care some type of universal plan.

34. I work for a Registrar of Voters and train poll workers...
I'm just wondering: Exactly what do you mean by "voter verified"?

Are you talking about walking away from your polling place with a piece of paper saying you voted this way or that? If so, doesn't that invalidate the notion that a person's vote is secret and private? Say I find your "voting receipt" laying on the ground; Can't I use it to challenge the outcome of an election I don't agree with?

Where I live, we have electronic voting and I trust it totally and wholly. We use a system called Eslate3000 made by Hart Inc. I believe in my heart that it's the most secure system out there. I teach poll workers how to use it. We went to it a while back, and yes, it took a ballot or two to get the kinks worked out. Not system kinks, OUR procedural kinks.

I always get confused by the "paper trail" notion. See, I worked inside the election process when we only had paper ballots. If you're of the opinion that paper ballots left a "paper trail", then I'm not sure what you intend to say; If you're telling me that you could track your ballot once you put it into the slot in the top of the ballot box, you're sadly mistaken. Once that box gets to the Registrar's office, you're standing out in the cold while the ballots are counted by hand/scanned. You'd NEVER be able to find your own personal ballot and say "see! I voted thusly and my candidate lost!

Please educate me about what "paper trail" means to you. I'd like to know.

:toast: Here's to ya. I'm not trying to ruffle feathers. Someone replied to a post of mine the other night and after welcoming me, told me I would learn much here. Teach me.

35. Welcome to DU Cherokee!!!!!!
Voter Verified Balloting means that after you vote a ballot comes out with your choices on them. You look them over and VERIFY that they are what you wanted, and if so then proceed to drop your verified ballot into a ballot box. That is the paper trail, locked in a ballot box after you verified it's intent.

:)

44. A thousand thanks to you OMC for the welcome and the explanation
That, I can buy. My county is working on a verifiable system, and there are many of us at odds as to how to make it work while STILL providing a private and secret vote.

I'll tell you what: My faith in human intelligence has been sorely tested since I've been involved in the voting process. You'd be SHOCKED by the number of people who cannot accomplish the task of darkening the box next to their candidate or their yes/no vote on a certain issue.

Our voting machines have instructions inside of them. We teach poll workers to explain to voters that they're not to push the "Cast Ballot" button until they're finished.

I'd say that 1 in 20 fail at the electronic balloting machines, and 1 in 30 can't complete a paper ballot without spoiling it.

Thanks for the welcome. It's the first time I've felt that it was heartfelt.

From that all else follows, without that all the other political issues are moot.

33. My Top Three
1. Election Reform

We need proportional representation desperately. We also need direct elections for the Presidency. Gotta count those ballots by hand, too. We need reform to energize our democracy. When turnout starts to be 20-40%, can America really even be considered a democracy, even nominally?

Imagine there are no districts. It's easy, if you try.

2. Health Care

Enough said.

3. National Security

There is a deficit of leadership in Washington. Our ports and borders remain unprotected. All sorts of sensitive facilities are open to attack, and it seems that our journalists delight in showing us how easy it is to gain unfettered access to them. We live in the most frighteningly dangerous period in human history. Instead of building bridges to nowhere, we need to start securing our nation.

That's it...

*scurries off to lurk some more*
