i just saw "bob roberts" for the first time in years |
|
got it on dvd in the cheap rack.
MAN is that movie eerie. 1992, yet it seems such a telling commentary on today. lying republican christofascists (yes, that term makes an appearance in the movie), secret government, saddam is just months away from building a nuclear bomb, etc.
not to mention i picked up on a few cameos by stars i don't think i had even heard of when i first saw the movie: helen hunt and jack black, for instance.

Do you know that there has never been a soundtrack released because Tim Robbins was afraid real fascists would use the songs?

2. I Cried When I First Saw It |
|
It's really weird. It's almost like I knew what was coming. I just felt this overwhelming sadness when I saw it in '92. And then, someone asked me why I was crying later on the bus going home. I told them I had just seen the film Bob Roberts. "Isn't that supposed to be a comedy?" they asked. They thought it was strange that it would make me cry.

3. I had to stop watching it. |
|
Still creeped out from it. Tim Robbins captured the banality of evil perfectly. I should try watching it again, now that we've seen the real thing I can probably handle it.

4. Yes, Robbins was brilliant |
|
the scene of him tapping his foot in time with his guitar playing, when he was supposedly paralyzed, is breathtaking.

5. In 1992 I actually worked for a guy named Bob Roberts |
|
and never even heard of the movie until a few years later. I thought it was some kind of sick joke until I actually had a chance to see it. :eyes:

6. I'm not sure I could take watching it again |
|
the part that gets me is when the journalist played by Giancarlo Esposito (the soul of the movie) gives way to despair in an interview towards the end. That would get me now.

7. i didn't see it as despair at all. |
|
he paints a bleak picture of what is, but he finished off with "i'm going to get you, bob roberts! and i won't need a gun to do it!"
sounds bleak but resolute.
