Is this the real reason for the war and the crack-down on dissent?
I've been trying for months now to figure out the point of all this stuff. War with Iraq, fabricating threats from Iran, villifying Chavez.... What do they all have in common? You already know the answer.

Why do gas prices go up, then fall back part way, then go up again, and fall back a little? Are they getting us ready for the Big Hit?

Is it even conceivable that the PNAC/neocons, with all their ineptitude, corruption, and thuggishness, are focused on something in America's future that most of us don't think about? Why does Hillary support the war? I'm not saying that I agree with the means - not at all. It's still not right to just kick someone's ass and take their stuff. But if this is the reason, we sure get a valuable insight into "why."

Here's two links. Read the first one and at least the synopsis on the second one.

Discuss.

1. OR... the oil is running out mantra
Has more to do with geopolitical decisions rather than supply issues. American oil interests are based on the money the oil companies want to make and as a result, they want oil in the cheapest possible way. If oil was really running out, then one would think people interested in making astonishing amounts of money, like even Halliburton would be interested in new technology as a sub. The fact that they are blowing this off, suggest to me a scare tactic in and of itself.

I think the real crisis is environmental, that is the reason the environmental community is so monitored by these guys. Notice no one runs around debunking or spending money debunking the oil is running out song. But at every turn, billions are poured into the "there is no environmental problem" campaign.

I think something catosrphic is happening with the environment and the oil is simply not going to be available as a result but not because it is running out.

FWIW: That guy is widely acknowledged to be intellectually dishonest.

Although I do think there's a lot of hysteria around peak oil.

On edit: Should finish my thoughts before hitting submit. There's a lot of hysteria around peak oil, but decreasing oil production is a huge problem and traditionally the biggest threats to civilizations involve resource depletion.

4. Google "peak oil."
I don't pretend to know how valid it all is, but if it's true... it's scary.

But don't for a minute think that it's motivating Bushco. Since when have they ever looked ahead?
