Do log cabin republicans actually exist? |
|
I'm just wondering because I know quite a few gay people and I don't know anyone who knows anyone who is one. Do they exist or is the whole thing, and idea, just made up?

3. I know a gay man who voted for Bush twice. |
|
He votes because of terror and tax concerns. Apparently, being gay has nothing to do with being a Democrat. He is a very good friend and former co-worker. He is a fairly conservative Southern man at heart.

15. Never understand how anyone can think Bush is strong on security! |
|
The facts speak for themselves. Blustering talk doesn't get it done. Plainly, Bush's policies have left the country more unprotected than ever and increased terrorism internationally. If he's concerned about terror, he should vote the world's most dangerous terrorist out of the WH.

He's a smart guy and a good friend and he's very interested in local politics but I don't think he puts a lot of thought into state and federal politics. :(

I love him. But, I wish he'd not vote Republican. Oh well. He is a wonderful artist, interior designer and landscape designer. His parents are good people and he is very close to them (lives in the same neighborhood just around the corner.)

42. I guess it comes down to, is politics more important than friendship. |
|
I've had to ask myself whether politics is more important than family, since my sister and her husband are Republicans, and sometimes their ignorance of what's going on, and their views, are astonishingly infuriating.
However, I, too, had to come to the conclusion that I'll have to hold my nose when it comes to their politics.
True friends are hard to come by. So, here's to you and your friend.

Probably in Houston as well.
Sad, isn't it? For the life of me, I can still can't figure it out, and I've tried. I didn't come out until I was in my late 20s. I was stunned to discover that some out gay men seemed downright homophobic in their attitudes towards politics, society and culture.
Bizarre.

their views have all been the same:
they don't find either party to perfectly reflect their views, they don't view themselves as defined entirely by their sexual orientation, and they don't believe the anti-gay rantings or the republican party will actually cause them any particular harm.
plus they're all greedy bastards who want their taxes lower and damn the consequences.

18. Yes. In his new book David Rakoff sat down with the president |
|
(or chairman maybe? I forget what his title was), of the group and had a series of interesting discussions with him. It's in the book, Don't Get Too Comfortable, which is a collection of essays on varying topics, some political some not. I forget the name of the Log Cabin essay, but it's worth reading because Rakoff, who is also gay, talks about his frustrations with the Log Cabin folks. (He's (Rakoff) a liberal with dual U.S/Canadian citizenship). It's very insightful.
I recommend the essay and the book itself. It helped me wrap my head around the whole concept a little bit.

23. I think Log Cabin republican are great because........ |
|
You don't want to abandon any major organization, be it a political party, the military, a club.
Because my fine DU friends, one good person working on the inside can lead changes that people on the outside can only dream of. Let them go! They protest, the complain, they make trouble (and push reforms) within the Republican party, in the end they sometime support candidates that we wouldn't approve of but they do much more good than they do harm.

with in the Republican party. A gay person at a Republican convention is worth more than you with a sign protesting from the other side of the street. A voice on the inside helps. Do you really think gay rights would advance faster if there were no visible gays within the Republican party?

The LCR's aren't "good people". They don't give a crap about any of the issues we do. For the most part, they associate with republicans because it benefits them financially. You are merely parroting their arguments for their own existence.

They're generally very successful executive types with rigidly compartmentalized lives, good enough at their jobs that being married to the job is sufficient for the board of directors, "out" to a very small, select group of other partially closeted, successful men.
They love the GOP because they generally live in arrangements that produce two executive level salaries and they actually do see GOP tax cuts. With no dependents to count, they won't have the AMT triggered but will see a great reduction in all other areas.
That they're voting for a party that panders to the homophobic religious crowd is really irrelevant to them. They know the culture as a whole isn't ready to accept them on their own terms, so they don't sweat it. They identify with the ruling class and don't give a rip about labor. They don't consider women particularly human, so the erosion of our rights doesn't disturb their slumber.
They really do exist, and there are quite a few of them, just from the very small sample I've met.
