I'm really not getting the politics of all this about the Patriot Act. Frist and Bush vowed they'd never allow a three-month extension while the sunset portions could be debated and then the Senate agreed to a six-month extension. Then that senior official at the White House said Bush would only allow a one-month extension. Is this just a play for power? Is it a refusal to give an inch even when what they're disagreeing over makes no sense?

If the House has to meet in January to debate the Patriot Act, it also has to pick a permanent replacement for Delay. The House was going to wait until late January to reconvene to give the Delay case time to resolve. Anything forcing them back early gets support from those wanting to replace Delay for good.
