The article is dated Dec. 21st '05. Please tell me if I'm reading this incorrectly!
It sure looks like Harri Hursti performed a hack test this Tuesday in CA for the SoS!

Diebold Hack Hints at Wider Flaws

By Kim Zetter
2005-12-21 08:35:00.0

Thompson and Harri Hursti, a Finnish computer scientist, were able to change votes on the Diebold machine without leaving a trace. Hursti conducted the same test for the California secretary of state's office Tuesday. The office did not return several calls for comment.

I looked on B*v's website to see if she had anything to report about another Hursti test. Nothing.
What's up with this?! No publicity at all? Not even from Hursti?!

On edit:
Diebold demanded that the test results of their crappy machines be kept secret.
THAT is the only conclusion I can reach about why this isn't being widely reported.

1. The whole article is a great read.
It acknowledges that Diebold may not be the only enemy of clean elections.

Election officials spooked by tampering in a test last week of Diebold optical-scan voting machines should be equally wary of optical-scan equipment produced by other manufacturers, according to a computer scientist who conducted the test.

Election officials in Florida's Leon County, where the test occurred, promptly announced plans to drop Diebold machines in favor of optical-scan machines made by Election Systems & Software, or ES&S. But Hugh Thompson, an adjunct computer science professor at the Florida Institute of Technology who helped devise last week's test, believes other systems could also be vulnerable.

2. BBV.org wrote that CA's SoS required (per Diebold's demands) that ALL
tests be conducted in secret. Is THAT why we aren't hearing anything about it?!

:grr:

3. LOOK AT THE TIMING ON THIS !!!
On Monday, (12/20), McPherson sends a letter to Diebold, announcing that they want the Feds to certify the voting machines.

On Tuesday, (12/21), Harri Hursti performs a private hack test for McPherson.

... So McPherson complied with the 19202 Request from BBV.org to have the machines tested the day AFTER he turned the decision of certification over to the Feds.

4. This is too confounding.
Why would B*v be involved if there were no publicity or money?

I've sent an email to the office of State Senator Bowen. She has been the most involved (in the CA Legislature) in cleaning up our elections. I'll post what I hear back.

5. UPDATE:
According to Bev Harris, this hack test by Harri Hursti, did NOT take place in California.

... No confirmation from any other source has been available.
The story at Wired.com has been scrubbed.
