IMPEACHMENT BREAKTHROUGH

Since we told you Tuesday night about Congressman Conyers' new bills to hold Bush and Cheney accountable for their war lies, 26,000 people have visited the action alert page, and 17,000 have Emailed their Congress Members. You can add to those numbers here:

Already there are seven cosponsors of a bill to create an investigation and make recommendations on impeachment, four cosponsors on a bill to censure Bush, and five cosponsors on a bill to censure Cheney.

This work, combined with our polling on impeachment, and the news that Bush authorized illegal spying on Americans, has pushed impeachment into the media.

For many months the media wouldn't cover and Congress wouldn't talk about the public's demand for impeachment of Bush and Cheney because the pollsters wouldn't poll on it, and the pollsters wouldn't poll on it because it wasn't in the media and wasn't in Congress. Remember Gallup's excuse for not polling?

The week before Christmas, things changed. Look at the spike in instances of the I word in recent media punditry.

And Congress Members and Senators are talking about impeachment. Rep. John Lewis says he favors it. Rep. John Conyers has introduced a bill to create an investigation into grounds for it, and seven other Congress Members have immediately signed on. Senator Barbara Boxer announced that she is asking legal scholars for advice on it. Senator Kerry said there are grounds for impeachment; then he flip-flopped -- but it wouldn't be Kerry without that.

No longer can pollsters honestly claim that they are refusing to ask the public about impeachment because it's not a topic in the news or the halls of Congress. But that doesn't mean they won't keep doing so dishonestly, unless we let them know how many of us are watching, unless we use the internet and the radio the way we did to force the Downing Street Minutes into the news.

NATIONAL DAY OF TOWN HALL FORUMS ON ENDING THE WAR

Organize public meetings or smaller gatherings on Saturday, January 7, on the topic of ending the war!

There are 60 events already planned around the country. Many Congress Members have been invited to attend by their constituents. Some have already commited to doing so, including: Bobby Scott, Diane Watson, Jim McDermott, Eleanor Holmes Norton, Adam Smith, and Dave Reichert.

One focus of some of these events will be Congressman John Conyers' new resolutions to censure Bush and Cheney and to create a select committee to investigate and make recommendations on impeachment. Rep. Conyers, and many other Congress Members, are likely to participate.

Also already confirmed to take part are several congressional and senatorial candidates, various local elected officials, and leaders of the peace movement, including Gold Star Families for Peace founder Cindy Sheehan.

4. calls for impeachment abound

The American people are demanding impeachment. It is about time!

I don't understand why at this time Conyers introduces a bill to censure Bush over the Iraq lies? Shouldn't he go with the momentum of the moment, and introduce articles of impeachment over Bush breaking the law and spying on American citizens? (http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=html_table">A DUer has already written it up) Is an investigation even needed at this time? We know Bush broke the law. Bush knows he broke the law "Wiretaps require a court order. Nothing has changed." What more do we need. Why are they giving Bush the chance to come up with an excuse. The Republicans would not give us that leeway. As Feingold stated "if there was a legal justification, they would have come up with it by now"

Talking about impeachment is good, but action is even better.

Hopefully these meetings will motivate folks to protest at the State of the Union January 31

Here's a great LTTE I just read on impeachment...

Impeach Bush: Our President is officially out of control.
After considering his latest TV performance in defending his latest scandal, I write today to sound the alarm that our President is officially out of control. Though I had not considered it a serious possibility, after reflecting on it I agree with those who say it is time to get rolling with our impeachment option.

This is not about Bush’s stalwart though factually weak defense of the truly out of control spying on Americans. This is about the "tact" that they decided to use and the fact that they had the full year granted to them by the New York Times to prepare how they would answer the public for their deed.

Make no mistake about how drastic it was either. It was (is) widespread spying on mostly innocent people in hope of nabbing a few evil ones, and it was (and is) being done without any true checks or oversight.

With that being the reality, the defense they could have chosen could have been either a reasonable or a radical one.

Predictably they chose the latter. The simple strategy of it was as obvious as if we were watching it unfold on the TV version of the West Wing.

"Okay, team, it’s go time, let’s go on the offensive! Say damn right we did it and we’re not apolozing, and we’re going to continue to do it whether anyone likes it or not! Remind them some more about 9/11!

"And don’t forget, tell Americans to doubt any political enemies who even want to make anything of it.

"And don’t forget, imply treason and defeatism of any who would be part of shedding light on it too!"

It is arrogance totally unchecked from the one person who holds the most power in his hands of any person in the world - at a time when America and the world are far more volatile and uncertain than ever.

As their nonsense goes on and on, impeachment is where I am today. Starting with the top Neocon (by proxy or not) - the 43rd President of the United States.

I'm concerned about the calls for censure.
When MoveOn.org began, that was their petition: Censure Clinton and move on to other business (that actually mattered).
I'm afraid that if we focus all of the rage, stemming from this over-the-top criminality, into censuring * and Cheney, and if we manage to pull it off -- that's where it will stop. There might not be enough momentum left for impeachment.
