Sail, sail thy best, ship of Democracy, |
|
Sail, sail thy best, ship of Democracy, Of value is thy freight, ‘tis not the Present only, The Past is also stored in thee, Thou holdest not the venture of thyself alone, Earth’s resume entire floats on thy keel O ship, is steadied by thy spars, With thee Time voyages in trust, the antecedent nations sink or swim with thee.
Walt Whitman “Thou Mother with Thy Equal Brood,” 1872
WE are that precious freight, together. Earth’s resume entire.

4. This Whitman quote is never too deep, |
|
for a Friday night, Christmas Eve, whatever.
IMO, it sums up what America meant to the rest of the planet in the 19th century and the 20th century.
Unfortunately, I don't think it still applies...

3. "We will not cease from exploration |
|
Edited on Sat Dec-24-05 03:17 AM by sfexpat2000
And the end of all our exploring Will be to arrive where we started And know the place for the first time. Through the unknown, remembered gate When the last of earth left to discover Is that which was the beginning: At the source of the longest river The voice of the hidden waterfall And the children in the apple tree Not known, because not looked for But heard, half-heard, in the stillness Between the two waves of the sea. Quick now, here, now, always-- A condition of complete simplicity (Costing not less than everything) And all shall be well and All manner of thing shall be well When the tongues of flame are in-folded Into the crowned knot of fire And the fire and the rose shall be one."
--The Four Quartets, Eliot, 1943
