Most of the Republicans I know are that way because of religion...

And the problem isn't that they're stupid. Not the ones running the show, anyway. Those guys are very smart and completely fucking ruthless. Sure, they trick your stereotypical Jim Bob redneck flag-waving mouth-breathing Bible-humping inbred troglodytes into voting for them, but calling them "stupid" is a serious underestimation. And what ultimately trips them up ISN'T stupidity; it's arrogance and overconfidence. Hubris. (Richard Nixon is an excellent example.)

17. Stubbornness
They got sold a pile of horse shit by a bunch of slick snake oil salesmen, and now they're terrified to admit they got suckered, that they were wrong and we were right.

Pity them. Just keep them the hell out of power.

19. First, a distinction between ignorance and stupidity.
Ignorance - You do it or think it or believe it because you don't know better.

Stupidity - You know better or otherwise and you do it or think it or believe it anyway.

The stupidity factor is refusing to consider an alternative and sticking with your way of doing or thinking things despite evidence that your way isn't working out.

29. Because they're fundamentally selfish and lack compassion
All of Rush Limbaugh & Co's messages are geared towards convincing the Right's rank-and-file base that they are really godly and patriotic people because no one wants to believe themselves so selfish and insular. The Right Wingers grasp onto any excuse given to them, no matter no obviously false, because in doing so they can avoid seeing themselves and the policies they support as they truly are. Any excuse, no matter how contrived, is useful in not taking seriously anyone who disagrees with the GOP leadership's agenda. People see themselves as good and can't accept that the policies they support are so harmful to this country and its citizens; not to mention the rest of the world. It's also helpful to convince people who don't benefit from the GOP's policies that their problems are always someone else's fault.

It's kind of like the mentality of the Inquisition era. No matter how convincing your arguments and appeal to the better part of human nature are when you state that those in power are doing terrible things your message can be negated by simply telling the masses that you're so convincing because your words are the words of the Devil. Those who disagree with the Right authority should be either shunned or silenced. If you listen you will be corrupted. The authorities are doing the work of good whatever their methods and anyone who opposes them is evil by definition.
