Sister bought a Focus On The Family magazine subscription
for my KIDS!

We get some confirmation letter from them saying that my loony sister and her whacked out husband bought a Clubhouse magazine subscription for my kids.

I just got off the phone with them, cancelling it and telling them to refund the money to my sister.

GAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHH! I just can't believe it!

Dobson advocates the spanking of children from 15-18 months to eight years old. According to Dobson, "pain is a marvelous purifier." (Dare to Discipline, p.6) He argues that "it is not necessary to beat the child into submission; a little bit of pain goes a long way for a young child. However, the spanking should be of sufficient magnitude to cause the child to cry genuinely." (Ibid., p.7.)

In The Strong-Willed Child (p.73), Dobson writes: "Some strong-willed children absolutely demand to be spanked, and their wishes should be granted." As for the magnitude of the spanking, he argues that "two or three stinging strokes on the legs or buttocks with a switch are usually sufficient to emphasize the point, 'You must obey me.'" (The Strong-Willed Child, pp. 53-4.)

Dobson directly connects parental authority to social authority: "By learning to yield to the loving authority...of his parents, a child learns to submit to other forms of authority which will confront him later in his life -- his teachers, school principal, police, neighbors and employers." (The Strong-Willed Child, p. 235.)

He frequently portrays the child as the natural enemy of the parent and emphasizes that it is necessary to punish the child to uphold parental authority. "When you are defiantly challenged, win decisively." (Dare to Discipline, p. 36.)

In The Strong-Willed Child, Dobson draws a strong analogy between child rearing and dog rearing. He tells a story in which the family dog refuses to leave his resting place on the lid of the toilet seat. According to Dobson, a "vicious fight" between him and the dog resulted in which he "fought him up one wall and down the other, with both of us scratching and clawing and growling and swinging the belt ." He concludes that "just as surely as a dog will occasionally challenge the authority of his leaders, so will a little child--only more so." (emphasis Dobson)

To deal with crying, Dobson recommends: "Real crying usually lasts two minutes or less but may continue for five. After that point, the child is merely complaining, and the change can be recognized in the tone and intensity of his voice. I would require him to stop the protest crying, usually by offering him a little more of whatever caused the original tears." <2>

8. Dobson is also the nutcase who advocates
men taking their boys into the shower with them for a session of show and tell. It's my fervent hope that one day, acting on Dobson's advice, some wingnut idiot is arrested for child molestation. "But, your honor, James Dobson, a good Christian, told me to do it."

10. I wonder how many boys Dobson has done this to?
You know, all in the name of being a "fatherly figure" to them. Religion is a cloak used by many pedophiles because of their access to easily manipulated children (and their parents).

6. Bravo!
Excellent news and thanks for sharing. Such publications are how they latch onto young minds. The next evolution is attendance at Young Republican Meetings. Thanks for being a good parent. Maybe you should send your sister a subscription to Hustler Magazine; since she attempted to expose your children to pornography.

12. Oh, don't even mention "evolution" to these folks!
I went to the site, and started going through the movie reviews, and happened to click on "Ice Age" and it said "No drugs, alchohol or profanity are used although some references to evolution pop up here and there."

OMIGAWD, how DARE they slip some actual SCIENCE in there!!!!! :sarcasm:

Probably because she was sitting in a call center in India and is Hindu.

20. Well, Dobson is right about one thing.
Kids DO have "fake crying" and "real crying." They start out "real crying" when they're upset about something (deprived of a toy, hit by another child, they stumble and fall and feel pain). Then after a while, they're not feeling the anguish so intensely but they still feel the need to continue to let people know they're upset, so the "fake crying" begins. You can hear the changeover if you listen carefully. "Real crying" is an uncontrolled wail from the heart..."fake crying" has more voice and control, less wail.

That having been said, though, the last thing I would do to any child is hit the poor kid to make him or her cry...and hit him or her more if he or she "fake cried." Sheesh! I don't believe in physical punishment for children at all...much less if it's designed to make children blindly obedient to authority.

Yes, let's teach children how to behave...but if the only way we can do it is with physical violence, we teach kids that he who is the most physically violent is he who rules the world. They internalize that lesson but good...and some of them vow that when they become adults, no one will ever be more physically violent than they are. No matter what it takes.
