1. Warms the cockles of my black old heart
Golly, Lil George, finally learning a lesson or two from all those mistakes he can't admit he's made. It's just a damn shame that all those thousands and thousands of people had to die first.

Kristof seems highly impressed with the fact that the American wehrmacht was able to knock off The Taliban in Afghanistan and the Iraqi army (hey, whatever happened to them, anyway?). The Taliban, a group of war scavengers without formal funding, training or the usual accoutrements of a modern army seems to be doing a pretty good job of occupying the occupiers. The Iraqi army, outmanned, outgunned, outsupplied, nevertheless held off the advance of the "allied" army long enough to just sort of fade away. Who knows when or where they might choose to reassert themselves? And Kristof counts those as positives for Lil George!

Kristof seems so preoccupied with musing on the classics of Greek literature, he's oblivious to the fact that Lil George ain't no Achilles, but he is a heel.

2. Kristof is an asshole
sorry to be so blunt, but things are so completely screwed right now that it is easy to identify who is a complete asshole. dennis miller, yes. john mellencamp, no.

Like David Brooks' "writing", Kristof's pieces are poorly designed pseudo-intellectual covers for the crimes of the BFEE and others.

makes me ill.

3. the nerve
...the unmitigated gall, to suggest that a war like this is a learning experience for one so completely bereft of intelligence as *.

I have read some real crap in my lifetime but never anything as despicable as this.

here's a great clip from this drivel--

Swift-Footed W.
By NICHOLAS D. KRISTOF

Published: October 22, 2003

Then we have the White House's seizing control over Iraq policy from the Pentagon ideologues. That's potentially a very important shift because it empowers pragmatists like Condoleezza Rice and Colin Powell, who, unlike the civilian leaders at the Pentagon, don't filter all information through ideological sieves.

To pursue the classical parallel, Don Rumsfeld can be compared to Ajax, the Greek warrior who had great force projection — but was so deluded that he laid waste to what he perceived to be his enemies and turned out to be a herd of cattle. (But a prominent classics scholar called the comparison daft, noting that Ajax "has such nobility of spirit.")

Homer's most powerful lessons include the need to restrain hubris, to cooperate with allies, to engage the real world rather than black-and-white caricatures. If Achilles and Odysseus can learn those lessons, maybe there's hope for Mr. Rumsfeld or even the mighty Mr. Bush.
