How many electoral votes is Vermont worth?
And also, does Vermont normally vote Democratic or Republican in presidential elections?

3. Bernie Sanders is their House Rep.
He's an independent but a socialist at heart.

Since 1960 here is how the state voted:
JFK-Nixon for Nixon
Johnson-Goldwater for Johnson
Humphrey-Nixon for Nixon
McGovern-Nixon for Nixon
Carter-Ford for Ford
Carter-Reagan for Reagan
Mondale-Reagan for Reagan
Dukakis-Bush for Bush
Clinton-Bush for Clinton
Clinton-Dole for Clinton
Gore-Bush II for Bush II

So up until the 90's Vermont had been a fairly dependable GOP state.

10. Vermont used to be a very Republican state
Up until the late 1950s it was one of the most reliably Republican states in the Union. In fact, even in the FDR landslides of 1932 and 1936, it voted Republican. LBJ's landslide victory there in 1964 was the first a Democrat had ever carried the state in a presidential race.

The state sent its first Democrat to the House in 1958. Philip Hoff won the Governor's office in 1962 for the first time. Pat Leahy is the only Democrat ever to hold a Senate seat in VT. He won in 1974 for the first time. Bernie Sanders is the only Socialist in Congress. He won in 1990 and has stayed in office since then.

Bill Clinton was the first Democrat since LBJ to carry the state since 1964. Since then the state has voted Democratic. As the modern GOP has become more associated with the conservativism as the deep south, states like Vermont, which were once part of the "New England" base of the Republican party, have been turning toward the Democrats.

So, while VT has a strong Republican history, in the present, it seems like it is gravitating toward the Democrats. So I would call it a Democratic state now.
