Dean on the Anniversary of the Death of Paul and Sheila Wellstone.

BURLINGTON--Tomorrow marks the first anniversary of the death of Paul and Sheila Wellstone. Howard Dean released the following statement this afternoon:

"One year ago, America lost two of its most passionate voices for our country's ideals. There are very few who have served our country with such integrity as Senator Paul Wellstone and his confidante, most trusted advisor and wife Sheila.

"Paul Wellstone knew what leadership meant. He never stopped to think about what was popular; he always did what was right. He never put his career above the needs of the people. He never forgot that there were millions of Americans who have no voice to speak for them in Washington, and that representative government was about standing up for every single one of them.

"Sheila Wellstone, too, was a fighter, and her work brought attention to the plight of those Americans who suffer from mental illness, so many of whom are not able to advocate on their own behalf.

"For the sake of everything the Wellstones fought for and everyone they spoke for, let us honor their memory through our works as well as our words."

1. His loss was a disaster
A Democrat who stood up and said, "No, I am not a me-tooer on the Bush presidency." I firmly believe his principled stance against the war would have won him another Senate term, and sent a message that the way for Democrats to win is to take such principled stands, and not to follow the DLC line of supporting this "president" when he is so clearly wrong on so many issues.

2. Remembering how the GOP...
...spun and slandered with orchestrated talking points and shameless attacks concerning the Wellstone memorial service still hacks me off to this day...

4. I'm so Glad that Dean has made a statement on
what was a very Sad day for our Country! I cried my eyes out when I heard the news at work last year! I'm sure People thought someone in my Family had passed on!

I had to deal with someone who was a customer at work today that saw my Dean button and said "Dean is a joke and unelectable"..I said "who is electable?"..For some crazy reason I thought he was going to say kerry or clark but he said "bush" and I go .."he's the Joke"!

5. Hard to believe it's been a year. We sure miss him in

Minnesota. There was only one Paul. His wife and daughter were very special also.

I can't imagine the void that must be felt by the families.

It's still unbelievable. To my understanding everyone on that plane was very unique and touched the lives of those around them.

6. Paul and Sheila Wellstone touched a good many people.
I was lucky enough to meet him once, and I still have the invitation from the event where I met him.

My relatives in Minnesota were very upset when he died, and I can tell you that there were a lot of people in the DC area who felt the same way. My old boss said that Wellstone was perhaps the only real mensch left in the Senate.

May the wonderful people we lost that October 25th rest in peace.

7. Can I ask a favor of Dean supporters here?
This is one of several excellent statements by Dean I've seen put up on DU. None of the people who put them up provide a link. Can that change? I'd run this on truthout tomorrow if I had a link. Thanks.
