Oxymoron of the day.....
Edited on Wed Oct-29-03 09:15 PM by ablbodyed
I delivered a piece of mail titled BAPTIST VISION. Can there be anything much more ludicrous that that?

9. I have contempt for....
belifs based on stupidity, cowardice and meanness. Most baptists exemplify that. An absolute literal interpretation of the bible is for the brain-dead. There is a growing scism in the baptist world. People like Jimmy Carter are leaving. They're leaving because the traditional baptist separation of churches, so that each congregation can choose its own pastor, decide among themselves their theology and beliefs, is being denied them by the national baptist groups who want control.

22. To be quite honest, no I don't
Look, to be quite honest, the Bill OReileys of the world are quite correct when they say that no one is looking out for Christians. He loves pointing out that Muslims are protected, but the Christian religion never has the ACLU back it.
Part of that, though, is because the Christian religion can take care of itself. It has plenty of people sticking up for it, and eager to force it down our throats.
Maybe people would have more sympathy for Christains if they would back off a bit. Just because someone enforces separation of Church and State doesn't mean that they are starting an all-out war on Christianity.

Besides, I am doubting that there is much violence against Baptists going on in the country.

24. so
all that means NOTHING

religious intolerance is religious intolerance regardless of who its against.

just because christians have power its ok?

if someone posted something 1/10 as offensive about muslims there would be an outcry

and they would be gone

26. Let's test your theory. I say that Muslims worship false gods, they are
all terrorists and should be bombed into the stone age.

How's that?

25. Actually, the ACLU (of which I am a proud card-carrying member) has
gone to bat for many christian organizations and individuals. The famous (infamous?) KKK group in Chicago some years ago and more recently defended inmates in a prison very near here their right to have bibles which the warden had deemed improper.

19. Welcome to DU
Home of religion haters everywhere...no distinction is made for the hundreds of thousands of spiritual folk that are beautiful, inspiring, liberal-minded compassionate people. You're either with us or your with the fundamentalists - that's the motto. :)

You get used to it after a while... I still squak sometimes when I get mass stereotyped because I have a personal faith, but it doesn't really make much difference.

It's ok - in the end, its a political board, and the fanatical fundie Christian ultra-right totally blows, so when people get a little fast and loose with the anti-religious language, when they really mean to be using anti extremeist hateful ridiculous bastardization of religion language... I'm trying to roll with it. :D

33. I agree with Selwyn.
There are a few here who just hate religion, but most of us save our wrath for the fundies-- the political ones. Some don't much know, or care, if there's a difference. Once in a while someone gets bumped for excessive religion bashing, but most of the time we just kind of gnash our teeth a little and let it pass.

FWIW, I've seen Jews, Muslims, Wiccans, Buddhists and various brands of Christianity here. Must be some others I've missed. Don't doubt for a minute there's a few Bible-beltin' fundies here who grate at the bashing but actually go along with most of our politics. Or other equally sincere Catholics, Jews, Muslims and others who get into a bit of a snit at some of the positions stated here, but stick around for the good stuff.

:hi:

Stick around-- it gets worse with the candidate bashing threads, but it's still worth it.

34. The reason I think Baptist vision is funny
is more because of the hypocracy of the RW fundie Baptist. Its like they are so uptight, judgemental and self righteous that its OK to make fun of them. To me, anyone who takes themself too seriously is setting themselves up for being made fun of. (expecially when they give you sooo much ammunition.
