Largest union says its backing will go to Dean ‘or no one’ !!!
A bit of a different angle from the thread in LBN here.

<snip>

WASHINGTON, Oct. 30 — Democratic presidential front-runner Howard Dean appeared on the brink of a major triumph Thursday, as the nation’s largest labor union said it would either endorse him or no Democratic contender when its board meets next week. Service Employees International Union president Andrew Stern said, “It is becoming clear that the passion of the members lies with Governor Dean, and that ultimately the decision before the board will be to either endorse him or endorse no one.”

<snip>

That's quite a commitment, if they actually vote that way.

Either Dean, or no one. I'm truly not sure how I feel about this. And I'm goin for Dean so far.

Damned Unions are startin to act like the GDer's at DU fer god's sakes, LOL!!!

Hoo, boy! Looks like the locks are being brought out for polishing, no?

Discuss.

1. feels like a railroading...
The obvious inference is that the unions will not endorse a Democratic nominee other than Dean in the general election. This is worrisome.

2. Just for the primary.
All the unions will rally behind the eventual nominee.

11. Definately. There's too much at stake for them not to.
But it seems clear that strongly favor Dean to win that nomination.

I'm curious why Dean over Gephardt? Dean's national numbers put him with everyone else.

4. Check again
I do not see any reference to not supporting a different nominee in the General Election. My understnding is that they may endorse Dean's nomination or they will not have a preference for which Democrat get's nominated. Big difference.

35. It's just one (large) union and the rank and file are demanding Dean.
Not the union bosses.

44. Apparently the members want Dean, the officials are giving in.
The people can vote however they please.
The teachers' union here in Florida endorsed McBride, but most of the teachers voted for Jeb anyway.

Of course, they are sorry, but they did not have to honor what the union said.

5. It Also Suggests That Gephardt Is Out Of A Major Union Endorsement...
Which is freakin amazing considering his history, and that they have now put him in the 'no one' category.

Damn, man. Curiouser and curiouser...

We need an Alice in Wonderland icon. Course we've needed one for about three years now.

6. That's a wierd statement to make -
The passion of the members... ?

I'll tell you something, I belonged to a national union for over 20 years, and three months out from the primary, 95% of the members didn't even know who was running, much less feel passionate about anything.

FWIW....

but the nationals are verrry political.

Maybe they define "passion" as their suprise that members are speaking out at all?

41. Union Leadership
cares, and so do locals but it takes a little time. I can tell you that Dean is connecting with his stand up to Bush*. He is on Bush* every time he says something, people notice. He is also right on the big issues, I.E. gun control.

18. And as a Dem....
....you SHOULD be angry.

I wear my anger as a badge of honor. It is a gift and I will use it to defeat Bush and defeat Ralph Regula. Most others just want to use it to defeat Howard Dean.

he got to this point by being angry at what has happened to our country by Bush, the right wing, and Bush enablers. I for one, join him in that anger and embrace it.

25. Very true
Usually when he gets to the "hope" part, we're rifling through the pockets of homeless people and Kerry supporters, so I tend to miss that part of his speech.

Incidentally, the homeless people always have more money in their pockets than the Kerry supporters do. I still don't know why.

For 35 cents a day (milk money) we'll keep an eye on your home/business.
For 1 dollar day (lunch money), we'll make sure no strange accidents happen to your home/business.
For 2,000 dollars per election cycle we'll make sure that accidents DO happen, but in another part of town, and we weren't there when that stuff went down.
