Newsweek cover "Bush's $87 Bil Mess: Waste, Chaos, Cronyism" Bush tense
I was in the grocery store and saw the last copy (all the other magazines were fully stocked) - a closeup of Bush's face looking tense and sweaty, and that headline. I debated about whether to buy it or leave it there and maybe open some Republican's eyes. But I had to have it. Titles/Captions of the articles:

"Even administration insiders are starting to worry abouthow the war will affect the president's re-election chances. In New Hampshire, the omens aren't reassuring."

"McCain sees a parallel to Vietnam 'in terms of information the administration is putting out versus the situation on the ground.'"

"The $87 Billion Money Pit"

"US taxpayers are footing most of the bill for this ill will, despite some $13 billion in grants and loans pledged at a UN conference."

"When it comes to footing the bill for Iraq, Washington ought to take a cue from Shakespeare, and not play financial games: Neither a Borrower Nor..."

A super chart on "Where it Goes...How it's Spent"

"Waste, Fraud, and Abuse" (my comment: Halliburton!!! and other American companies overchargine!!!)

"Rumsfeld's 1950's-style unilateralism is out of touch with the way the world works"

WOW!

1. It's really great to see all
the positive DU responces to the latest issue of NEWSWEEK. Like I've been saying for months now, NEWSWEEK has been consistently hammering the hell out of chimp inc. I'm glad that, over the last week, many posters have alluded to this issue of "our" best news weekly. I got my 1st subscription from a NPR promotion (imagine that) about a year ago.... DU'ers: support NEWSWEEK, SUBSCRIBE!

8. I was just thinking
Edited on Sat Nov-01-03 11:43 AM by Woodstock
Newsweek will probably get letters from those head in the sand blind faith type of Repbulicans (listening to Diane Rehm yesterday, one called in, and even the Washington Times guy laughed when the guy said liberals should all move to France - the guy sounded really emotional and outraged, but he had not a fact to say - just blind praise of "good and brave" Bush - a true patriot this guy was not)

so I'm going to write Newsweek a letter saying, "Good work"

BTW, the USA Today correspondent Susan Page (sp?) on the DR show said she thinks the press is now waking up from the 9/11 hands off stance - if true, I can only say, what took them so long, the country is going to hell

2. Kewl! Might have to actually buy a copy. Usually can't bear to read
mainstream 'news'.

3. We subscribe, and it was very reassuring to see that
some main stream media are becoming very, very, alarmed with the intellectually challenged far rightwing agenda of this faux administration.

4. There was also an article about the new voting machines
It was a good article, but too short, only one page.

5. The part about the $333-per-course computer training...
... pretty much blew me away. Hey, I'm all for education, but I don't see the taxpayers handing out $40 million to any of our local school districts.

I don't mean to sound callous here; I feel that this is the kind of thing that most average Americans would be incredibly stunned to learn of, and it's important when a major media outlet spells it out.

The Newsweek article and cover was landmark, I think, and the way it stares out at you from its current spot on the check-out rack makes it a worthy message that's hard to miss.

6. Newsweek article re-printed on MSNBC
Looks like much of the $87b 'reconstruction aid' that Bush looted the treasury for will wind up in the pockets of corrupt US contractors and officials in Iraq.

The $87 Billion Money Pit

"It’s the boldest reconstruction project since the Marshall Plan. And we cannot afford to fail. But where are the billions really going?"
