MS Elections
I heard someone on Capital Gang mention that if no one gets a majority of the vote on Tue that the MS legislature decides.

1. That was Al Hunt
I had never heard that before. I think the Dems probably control the legislature, but I'm not sure. Mississippians?

3. MS elections
Yes, the election will go to the legislature if neither major candidate gets 50% of the vote. This happened in 1999 and the current Governor who I work for was chosen by the legislature. The GOP candidate then was behind over 1000 votes but refused to concede the election so we had to go to Janurary to get a new Gov. This does not need to happen this time. If any of you guys are close enough or know anyone here in MS, please call them and tell them to go vote Democratic. We also have a lady running for Lt. Gov. who faces an uphill battle. She is the first african american woman to run for this post. She is currently about 8 points behind but maybe we can close that.
also if anyone wants to come up here to McComb, MS on election day to help us with canvassing, I am sure there will be plenty to do. We need EVERY vote to turn out.
THANKS for your interest in our battle against the worst of the GOP, Haley Barbour.

4. Welcome to DU, Joel!!
You'd be interested in Novak's comments about Barbour tonight on "The Capital Gang."

Novak called attempts to smear Barbour as a segregationist a "Democratic canard."

Hmmm... nice canard.

Welcome to DU, and we're all on your side, ya know.

5. Blackhawk Political Rally
That pic is from the blackhawk political rally, a gathering of racists and white supremacists here in this state. It was not always that way but in recent years it has become increasingly so. The CCC puts it on. go to www.cofcc.org to see what these idiots believe. Some seriously wacked out stuff. Also the boston globe has ran a story about Haley saying some racist stuff in his campaign in 1982 against MS sen. john stennis.

here is the exerpt from the article.

"The racial sensitivity at Barbour headquarters was suggested by an exchange between the candidate and an aide who complained that there would be `coons' at a campaign stop at the state fair. Embarrassed that a reporter heard this, Mr. Barbour warned that if the aide persisted in racist remarks, he would be reincarnated as a watermelon and placed at the mercy of blacks."

Barbour's refusal to reject the CCC's use of his photo suddenly brings his own history back to life. It raises the question of how much he clings to it and how much he feels his white voters need to desperately hold on to a tragic past and a segregated future to feel good about themselves. If Barbour will not let go of the photo, it is up to the GOP to take it out of his hands. Otherwise it may win the Mississippi State House, but continue to lose the hearts of decent thinking Americans. The GOP will once again crush any hope or optimism that Americans can walk into a polling place without race being the silent lever in the voting booth.
