Former first lady Barbara Bush says after attending the inauguration of her son, George W. Bush Jan. 20, 2001, her thoughts were on Al Gore.

The president's mother, whose new book, Reflections: Life After the White House, is excerpted in Newsweek, wrote from that day, ''I know I should be thinking marvelous deep and lofty thoughts, but I find myself thinking of Al Gore and what he must be feeling.
